Obituary of Alice Ivey

Alice Alma Lillian McConnell was born to Wilbert McConnell (1873 - 1962) and Caroline Schick (1881 - 1962) on June 6 1915, North of Balcarres Saskatchewan. Along with her siblings listed below, the family moved to various farms in the Lorlie, Indian Head and Ituna areas. She attended schools in those areas ending with St. Joseph de Dauphinais in the Ituna area. Alice married James Ivey (1911 - 1995) in 1938 and she gave birth to a son Barry in January of 1940 followed by another son Ray in 1943. She lived on a mixed farm West of Ituna farming with her husband and raising their family. She loved the farm and the animals. She loved to garden, and to knit and crochet which she did lots of and I think everyone she knew had a doily or two she had made. She also cut hair for many of the local men and did lots of perms for the ladies. She also made many wedding and anniversary cakes for people. She volunteered at the United Church Auxiliary and the Farmer's Union along with brother Harvey. She was a "go to" person, (maven) in the community and was quick to help in disseminating information by phone about events in the area. In later years she moved from the farm into Ituna where she lived before moving to the Balcarres Extended Care Home where she lived until getting transferred to the Ituna Pioneer Lodge in November 2016. She was taken to the hospital in Melville in early February and had recovered from influenza A and was waiting to be transferred back to the Lodge in Ituna. She passed away unexpectedly but quietly and gently with son Barry and his wife Barb at her side on Feb 14, 2017. She will be sadly missed by her family and all who knew her. She was the last of the children of Wilbert and Caroline to pass away. Alice was predeceased by all her siblings listed below and by one Granddaughter Bonnie Jo Ivey 1962-1962 (Barry and Barb) and one Grandson Scott Ivey 1970-1987 (Ray and Dianne). Eva McConnell (Bearden) 1903 - 1987; Francis McConnell 1905 - 1905; Joyce McConnell (Ivey) 1906 - 1993; Adeline McConnell (Ballagh) 1908 -2010; Frank McConnell 1911 - 1992; George McConnell 1912 - 1994. Daisy McConnell (Ivey) 1918 - 1985; Roy McConnell 1920 - 1998; Harvey McConnell 1922 - 2003; Blanche McConnell (Fuhr) 1926 - 2003. It is of interest that Alice's mother Caroline was born on February 14th and that Alice passed away on February 14th. She is survived by her son, Barry & Barb, their son Curtis & Korie & their son Haakon, and her other son Ray & Dianne and their sons Shaun & Janice, and Lyndon & Mell and their daughter Silven and son Ridley. A very special thank you to Kathy, Jim and Wendy and staff at Balcarres extended care home for the great care they gave mom. Cremation has taken place. There will be a service for Alice at a later date.
