Obituary of Violet Hertzke

Violet hertzke of Yorkton, beloved wife of the late Hugo Hertzke was lifted up to heaven in the arms of her Lord in the early hours of Saturday, November 05, 2016 at the age of 98. She was born January 10, 1918 in Frauenburg, Latvia to Adolph and Natalie (Hait) Rutch. When she was about 4 years old she came to Canada with her parents and younger brother Albert. They came to Canada by ship and landed in Halifax, and then traveled on by train to their relatives the Haits who farmed near Ebenezer, SK. After a few years her parents bought a farm of their own near Hamton and expanded the family with another son Norman and 2 daughters Linda and Elsa. Violet helped with the outdoor chores as well as in the kitchen and received her education in the area. She was a devoted Christian and went to church regularly. On July 12, 1937 she married Hugo Hertzke and they farmed in the Gorlitz and then Ebenezer district for a while before they moved to the farm near Yorkton in the Orkney area. She was a hard worker helping with the harvest and tending to a large garden as well as raising her four children. She loved flowers and had a great variety. She also was a good cook and great baker and took a cake decorating course in Yorkton. She made many wonderful Chiffon Cakes for her friends and neighbors. People in town will also remember her for the cottage cheese and eggs that she sold. She loved to worship the Lord and sing hymns in the Pentecostal Church and was the Sunday School Director as well as always helping with other church events. She always wanted to help people so she became a foster mom for several children over the years. Violet had many good friends and neighbors and will be missed by her dearest friend Joyce Muir who was always there for her. After her husband died in 1990 she and her oldest son Harvey ran the farm. After Harvey went into the Nursing Home she continued alone on the farm renting it out but keeping her garden and the flowers that she loved. She remained on the farm until ill health made her move into the Yorkton Nursing Home where she resided until the time of her passing. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers and sisters, her husband Hugo in 1990, son Harvey 2013, and daughter Iona in 2014. She is survived by her son Allan (Geraldine) Herzke, Ladner BC, daughter Gail Sakal, Swan River MB, sisters-in-law Leona (John) Perra, Morinville AB and Ursula Hertzke, Lethbridge AB as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Six Grandchildren, Linda (Bob) Chancey, Ladner BC, Brian (Michel Berthiaume) Herzke Vancouver BC, Marilyn (Rick) Morrois, Ladner BC, Brad (Claire) Herzke, Langley BC, Kevin Sakal, Swan River MB and Jason (Renee) Sakal, Swan River MB; Eight Great Grandchildren, Brandon Chancey, Vancouver BC , Blake Chancey, Ladner BC, Tyler, Tessa and Ella Herzke, Langley BC, Seth Sakal, Swan River MB and Breanna and Anika Sakal, Swan River, MB. The Funeral Service was held Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Pastor Steve Rosluk of First Baptist Church officiating. The organist, Amanda Buhler led in the3 singing of the hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross", "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" and "Amazing Grace". Honorary Bearers were the Grandsons, Brian and Brad Herzke, Kevin and Jason Sakal and Great Grandsons, Brandon and Blake Chancey. The interment took place in Garden of Gethsemane at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with John Perra, Ken Washek, Jeff Just, Laurie Blommaert and Ray Blommaert serving as the casket bearers. Memorial donations honoring Violet's life may be made to First Baptist Church as gifts of remembrance.
