Obituary of Gwen Hackney

Mrs. Gwen Hackney, resident of St. Paul Lutheran Home, Melville, formerly of Yorkton and the Togo district, widow of Douglas Hackney, passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at the age of 88 years. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 1st 2016 at 3:00p.m. from the Chapel of Bailey's Funeral Home, downtown location. The interment will follow in the Togo Cemetery at a later date. Memorials in Gwen's name may be made to the Togo Cemetery Fund as tokens of remembrance. On Sept. 14th 2016 Gwendolyn Edith Hackney passed peacefully at the Saint Paul's Lutheran Home, Melville. Gwen, as she was known, was born on Sept. 22/1927 near Togo SK. She was the youngest of eight children born to Fred and Mary Franklin. Her early years of schooling were at the Alva school. Later the family moved to Togo where she completed her schooling. During the war years she worked in a bank in Winnipeg. In 1946 she married high school sweetheart William (Bill) Appel, where they took up residence on the family farm. During the summer months you would see her playing softball, in the winter time she enjoyed watching and participating in local curling. In 1954 her only child James was born. Gwen and Bill resided on the farm until Bill's passing in 1980. Gwen then moved into the town of Togo, causing quite a stir as she moved the family home as well. 1988 saw Gwen wed long time family friend Doug Hackney. Gwen and Doug went everywhere together, travelling to North Carolina, Florida, Texas and Mexico, enjoying golf and meeting new people. They eventually moved to Kamsack to make a new home. Doug's passing in 2003 led to her moving closer to Jim in Yorkton. She resided in Queen Elizabeth Court in Yorkton until ill health forced her to Saint Paul's Home in Melville. wen took great joy in knitting toques for newborns as well as many items for whoever wanted them. Shortly before her passing she received recognition for being a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for sixty years and was a lifetime Royal Canadian Legion auxiliary member. Gwen leaves to mourn her passing her son James Appel and life partner Gail Ethier and her family, stepdaughter Corrine Thoms (Brian) and family, and many nieces and nephews. Gwen was predeceased by her parents and seven siblings and their respective spouses, and several nephews and nieces. Special thanks goes out to the staff on Academy Road, Saint Paul's Lutheran Home for exceptional care and compassion to Gwen.
