Obituary of Agnes Stokman
STOKMAN - Mrs. Agnes Stokman of Yorkton peacefully passed into the arms of her Lord and Saviour at the age of 97 years. Agnes was born on September 25, 1918, in Haarlemmermeer, the Netherlands. She was the 7th child of 13 children. She married Cornelius Stokman in November 1947, and immigrated to Canada in 1952 as a farm labourer. After five years moved to Yorkton, Saskatchewan, where they raised their nine children. Mom was a busy mother caring and sewing all of her children's clothing. She grew a large vegetable garden which fed the family for the entire year. The many tasks of cooking cleaning canning and baking for her growing family kept her at home where we could always count on her being there when we got home from school. She was a dedicated active member of St. Gerard's parish and Catholic Women's League serving in the hall for various functions over the years She was proud to peel hundreds of pounds of potatoes to aid the fundraising efforts for the church even at the late age of 95. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was always interested in the lives of her children and their families. She loved the outdoors and took great pride in her yard and flower beds. She loved to travel taking every opportunity to visit with each of her children regularly. She made several return trips to Holland to visit with family she left behind so many years ago each time taking one of her children as a travelling companion. She spent the latter years of her life enjoying the company of those at the Queen Elizabeth and the Church. She loved playing cards, shuffleboard, exercise classes, hymn sing, bingo and playing in the kitchen band. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting and gardening, all of which she did with pride and passion. She made many afghans, quilts and baby sweaters for every incoming new member of the family, using each project as time to reflect and pray for the intended recipient. Mom always loved to read staying current on the events of the day. She was interested in the lives of those around her. Her smile was infectious and even though she couldn't always say the words in English that she wanted to say, the message of friendship got through with a solid handshake or a hug and a kiss. Agnes was predeceased by her husband, Cornelius, in 1991 and also by her beloved son, Jacob, in 2008. She leaves to celebrate her life in stories and fond memories, her children: Nick (Judy), Nellie (Garry) Barbour, Mary (Bob) Chomyn, Anne Stupak, Helen (Rudy) Kvale, Martha Gable, Willie (Betty), John (Darlene) and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
