Obituary of Edith Burianyk

BURIANYK – The family of Edith Burianyk of Regina, formerly of Ituna sadly announce her passing away on August 05, 2022 with her loving family by her side. Edith was born to the late Andrew and Parania Tataryn in the Homefield district of Saskatchewan on May 31, 1929. Edith was married to the love of her life the late Michael Burianyk for 59 years. Edith will be dearly missed by her children: Michael (Natalia), Andrew, Anna Maria (Alphonse), Kathryn (Robert), and her grandchildren Mark, Stefan, Adriana, Lileah and Sadie. Edith attended Nanton elementary school in Homefield and high school at Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon, where she resided at Petro Mohyla Institute. She obtained her Registered Nursing (RN) diploma at Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina where she met lifelong friends Carol and Edna. Subsequently, she nursed at Alert Bay Hospital in B.C., Shaughnessy Veterans Hospital, Vancouver, Colonel Belcher Veterans Hospital, Calgary, Birch River Nursing Unit in Manitoba, and Ituna Union Hospital. She finished her career as Director of Care at Ituna Pioneer Lodge. Edith was a life long member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada in Swan River, Ituna and Regina. In addition, she was a member of the Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada (UWAC), Ituna branch and Daughters of Ukraine, Regina branch. Edith was active in her community. She served with the Royal Canadian Legion, was a member of the Ituna Health Care Auxiliary, and a board member with the Ituna Housing Authority. She was also a board member and active volunteer with the Parkland Regional Library. Edith and Mike moved to Selo Gardens residence in Regina in 2001. They met many new friends and reacquainted themselves with old. Edith was an avid knitter and loved to knit for family and friends. Her days at Selo were also filled with daily exercising, visiting friends and attending Selo Gardens social activities. Edith loved to have her grandchildren visit and they all enjoyed playing Bingo with the residents. Her final move was to Selo Gardens Personal Care Home in September 2019 where she was lovingly cared for. Her care workers were always met with her bright smile. Edith’s days were spent reading and keeping up to date on family, friends and inquiring about their pets. She loved a good cat story! She always asked about her grandchildren's daily lives as she did not wish to lose memory of those closest to her heart. It was never a surprise to receive a text message at all hours asking how our day had been and sending her love. Her kindness and generous nature were remembered by all she meet. Edith welcomed with open arms, all friends and family into her life. Even though she lacked strength in her last days she always had the energy to say “I love you”. We love you too. Prayers were held on Thursday, August 11, 2022 and the Funeral Service on Friday, August 12, 2022, both from Descent of the Holy Spirit Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Regina with Rev. Father Volodymyr Feskiv officiating. The responses were led by Maksym Kazakov. Serving as the cross bearer was Michael Zaleschuk. Members of the Ukrainian Women’s Association paid tribute to Edith. The Interment followed in the Holy Ghost Parish Cemetery in Ituna with Michael Burianyk, Andy Burianyk, Stefan Burianyk, Robert Jarvis, Alphonse Noey and William Oleynik serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Edith may be made to the Ukrainian Refugee Fund, c/o the Descent of the Holy Spirit Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1920 Toronto Street, Regina, SK S4P 1M8.
