Obituary of Nestor John Kyba

Nestor John Kyba was born on October 3, 1935 in Canora, to Anthony and Stephania (Yurkiw) Kyba. He was the second oldest of 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Together with his parents and siblings, Nestor grew up on the Kyba family homestead East of Dneiper. Nestor received his elementary education at Cedric School in the Dneiper district, and then went on to graduate from St Joseph's College in Yorkton in 1954. Upon completion of high school, Nestor started farming with his parents. On August 1, 1964, Nestor married the love of his life, Jean Ostafie at the Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church at Dneiper. Together, they took over, and made their home on the family farm. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Debbie in 1966 and David in 1968. Nestor and Jean operated the family farm together, sharing many of the duties. When harvest came, Nestor would operate the combine and Jean would haul the grain, and as the years went on, and they got another combine, Nestor took over the grain hauling and Jean operated one of the combines. In the winter when Nestor wasn't busy pushing snow, he kept busy in the house helping with the cooking and washing dishes while Jean was busy sewing. Nestor and Jean remained on the farm until 2006, when due to health reasons, they moved to Yorkton. Nestor continued to rent out the land and maintain the farm yard until the farm was sold. Nestor was a true member of his faith. He was an active member of the Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church at Dneiper, serving as an executive member of the church and hall committees and singing in the choir. There were many great memories made, cutting the grass on the cemetery and church grounds, and preparing for, and enjoying the many New Year's and Pre-Lenten dances. When church services became less frequent at Dneiper, Nestor and Jean became members of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. In the last few years, Nestor once again, joined and enjoyed being a part of the church choir. In May, 1966, Nestor joined the newly established Father Decorby Council of the Knights of Columbus in Canora and was elected to the executive as the warden. Since that time, he served on the executive in many capacities including District Deputy. In 1992, Nestor and Jean enjoyed a trip to New York where Nestor was the Delegate for Saskatchewan at a Knights of Columbus function. Nestor was recently recognized as one of remaining charter members of the Fr. Decorby council. When Nestor and Jean moved to Yorkton, Nestor joined the Father Delaere Council of the Knights of Columbus. Nestor was also honoured to become a Fourth Degree Knight with the Brother Stanislaus Assembly in Yorkton. Besides the Church, Nestor also served as a leader of the Dneiper 4-H Club, a member of the Rhein Wheat Pool Committee and a member of the R.M. of Sliding Hills Parks and Recreation Board. Nestor and Jean always enjoyed socializing with friends and family with a cup of coffee or a drink, in the winter a game of cards, and in the summer a game of horse shoes. In 1996, Nestor approached a long-awaited milestone of his life, that of a Grandpa. His grandchildren, Brett, Braden and Brielle, quickly became the focus of his life, as was he of theirs. Grandpa was always there to support and cheer on his grandchildren in their sports, school concerts and dance recitals and was always available to get them to school and their activities when needed. When Jean became ill in 2004, Nestor stood by her side and assisted her as needed. He was able to bring her home from the hospital in time to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Nestor continued to care for Jean at home until her passing in 2009. Nestor continued to enjoy his grandkids, his church and Knights activities, as well as Yorkton Terrier hockey games, the horse races, and coffee row at the mall.
