Obituary of Sophie Husulak

Sophie Husulak (Rusnak), daughter of Wasyl and Domka (Markowski) Rusnak was born April 1st, 1920 in the Insinger District. Sophie was the 6th of 11 children. She always referred to herself as “the April Fool,” and always loved to celebrate her special day enjoying phone calls, cards, food, birthday cakes and parties to celebrate. In the Rusnak Family History Book she described herself as “not too tall, not too small, no education, just consider myself as happy and lucky.” Sophie passed away peacefully on Friday July 29, 2022 at the Theodore Health Center. She lived an amazing life of 102 years leaving behind a wonderful legacy to her family; her 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and to everyone who knew her. Sophie attended Lysenko School in Insinger, SK. She enjoyed activities with her friends like sports, singing, and dancing. She frequently spoke about the 2 most important school rules: never speak a word of Ukrainian at school, and never pick up your pencil with your left hand (this was a challenge as she was left-handed). In 1936, Sophie met Steve Husulak at her cousin’s home where she was babysitting. They were married October 14, 1940, and had a traditional 3-day wedding. After the marriage ceremony, Sophie went back to her parents’ home and Steve to his parents’ home where they each had a separate celebration supper. After supper, Steve picked up Sophie and they went to Steve’s parents’ home where the celebration together began. The next day, the celebration continued with a granary dance! The couple lived with Steve’s parents until 1944 when they bought a quarter of land in Insinger and moved to their own place with their 1 year old daughter, Joyce. The family grew to include Delores, Bev and Larry and the family legacy began. The children had an absolutely wonderful childhood growing up on the farm. Sophie and Steve loved to entertain in their home. It was like a “drop-in center,” with lots of food, drink, laughter, singing and card playing until all hours of the night. Their motto: “the more the merrier.” Sophie was predeceased by her parents, Wasyl and Domka Rusnak, her husband Steve in 1997; her brothers Nick (Ruth), Bill (Faye); John, Mike and sisters Mary (Bill Koshman), Kay (Steve Hnatiuk), Ann (Nick Kopan), Margaret (Dave Davidson), Iris (Bill Rusnak), Olga; and grandson Jerrett Koropchuk (2005).
