Obituary of Randolph Stephen Surjik
SURJIK - Mr. Randy Surjik passed away in Shaunavon on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the age of 72 years. Randolph Stephen Surjik was born on April 15, 1943 at Yorkton, Saskatchewan to Jennie (Jesskar) Surjik and Stephen Surjik. Randy lived at the farm near Wroxton until the family moved to Yorkton in 1944. Randy completed his high school education in Yorkton and then went to the Saskatchewan Technical Institute in Saskatoon to receive his certificate in X-ray technology. He trained at the Regina General Hospital from 1963 to 1965. In March of 1966, Randy started his career as an X-ray Technician at the Shaunavon Union Hospital, a position he held until his retirement in 1998, 32 years later. Randy was very involved in the community of Shaunavon, a place he called home for 50 years. He loved Shaunavon and they loved him. Randy had many interests, but three stand out more than others. Randy was interested in technology and always had the latest computer or camera on hand. Photography was an art that Randy took great pride in. Every family gathering involved sitting down with Randy as we went through his photo album with him. Randy was an exceptional cook. He helped prepare many meals for his family and catered to many events in the community. He was very proficient with Chinese cooking and taught some classes as well. Mostly though, Randy will be remembered for his piano playing and love of music. Randy started piano lessons at an early age, and continued learning throughout his life. He was an extraordinary pianist and was asked to play at many events. His prize musical possessions were his grand piano and his father's mandolin. Randy was a gentle man who was honest, caring, and had high principles of honour and integrity. He would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. Randy loved his community, his friends, and his family. His cat, Bartleby, also brought Randy much joy when he came into Randy's life in 2009. He will be missed by all who knew him. Randy is survived by: his siblings David (Myrtle) Surjik of Regina, Sonja Wheeler of Regina, and Victor (Evelyn) Surjik of Yorkton; his nieces and nephews David Surjik, Stephen Surjik, Myeva Surjik, Lynda Surjik, Glenda Elliott, Larisa Wheeler, Kim Wheeler, Del Surjik, Nadine Surjik, Lyndon Surjik, Bradley Surjik, J'neene Ethier, and their families and children. He was predeceased by his identical twin brother Edmund in 1943, his father Stephen in 1999, his brother-in-law Glenn in 2010, and his mother Jennie in 2012. A Memorial Service was held on Friday, April 15, 2016 at All Saint's Anglican Church in Shaunavon with Rev. Eleanor Rockabar officiating. The congregational hymns were "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace". Special Music was provided by the Hunter Brothers. The eulogy was conveyed by Nadine Surjik (niece) and Diane Greenlay (friend). The interment took place on Saturday, April 16th in the family plot in the Garden of St. John at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Glenda Elliott (niece) serving as the urn bearer and Ray Bailey presiding. Memorials honouring Randy's life may be made to the Shaunavon & District Music Festival Association or a Charity of Choice.
