Obituary of Alice "Elsie" Kohut
KOHUT - It is with deep sadness and sorrow that the family of Alice (Elsie) Kohut of Calder, SK announce her passing on April 2, 2016 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. She was 88 years of age. Elsie was born on January 5, 1928 in the Calder district of Saskatchewan; the eldest of seven children born to Metro & Rose (nee Rapchalk) Stasko. Elsie was raised on the farm and attended school in the district. On December 2, 1944 she was united in marriage to Nick Kohut. The couple resided on the family homestead where they farmed and raised their two sons and a daughter, John, Carl & Gloria. Elsie was a very hard working woman with many passions and talents, growing a huge garden, canning, quilting, an excellent cook (she cooked for many weddings of local residents over the years), and a helping hand to anyone. On December 2, 1982 Nick passed away, and following that time Elsie remained on the home farm, and was able to remain there into her retirement years with the help of her family. Besides her husband Nick, she was predeceased by her parents, Metro & Rose Stasko; a brother James Stasko; sisters Tenie (and John Rudachek), Verna (and Walter) Wavryk; brothers-in-law, John Katyrynuik, Ingi Einarsson, and Murray Matiation, as well as numerous members of the Kohut family. She leaves to cherish her memory her two sons: John of Calder, and Carl (Shirley) of Calder; daughter Gloria Todd of Yorkton; three grandchildren: Brad Todd, Derek (Kenda) Kohut, and Ashley (Derek Lesann) Kohut (which she shared a birthday with, along with Chinese food and birthday cake every year); great grandchildren (whom Baba adored) Brayden, Josh-Lynn, and Tayja. Also three sisters: Victoria Katyrynuik of Roblin, Christine Dressler of the Calder district, and Lorraine Matiation of Winnipeg; numerous nieces, nephews, and her many other relatives and friends. The Prayer Service was held on Thursday evening, April 7th 2016, and the Funeral Service on Friday morning, April 8th 2016, all from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre. Very Rev. Mel Slashinsky of Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church officiated. Cantor, Yvonne Panchuk, assisted by members of the Parish Choir, led in the singing of the responses. The crossbearer was Tony Katyrynuik. The interment followed in the Garden of Gethsemane with Ashley & Derek Kohut, Brad Todd, and Maryanne, Robert & Eugene Katyrynuik serving as the casketbearers.
