Obituary of Henry Wasylyshen

WASYLYSHEN - Henry Lornce was born June 21, 1934 to Wasyl and Oksana (Kitchen) Wasylyshen of Gorlitz, SK. His elementary education was received at Langenau School, three miles from home. He took Grade 9 and 10 by correspondence while helping his Dad at the farm. During this time, Henry was involved in 4-H and later became a leader. He enjoyed this very much, participating against several clubs in various towns. He began working at the Yorkton Co-op Creamery poultry division in 1957, remaining there for 37 years while still passionate about farming. During this time, he met Iris Korney at a Gorlitz dance and soon began dating. They married Oct. 10, 1959 at Mazeppa Ukrainian Orthodox Church and made their home in Yorkton where they were blessed with three sons, Ivan Henry (1960), Donald Peter (1962) and James Wade (1968.) Henry became involved with various committees for the Ukrainian Orthodox Ukrainian Church of Holy Transfiguration in Yorkton. He served on the Program Committee when the new hall was built. Both Henry and Iris also worked with catering groups for various functions. Their sons were involved in Cubs and Scouts and minor baseball which kept their Dad busy driving them to practises, games and other activities. Fishing and camping in the great outdoors occupied holidays together. During this time, Henry worked in the butter department of Co-op Creamery, retiring in 1994. He actively served as an elder at his church and assumed responsibilities for St. Basil's in Gorlitz, the little country church where his parents and grandparents are buried. He was a member of the Order of St. Andrew, Yorkton chapter, also serving as president for some time. Henry received a 4-H leadership award from the University of Saskatchewan in 1961. During his many years farming, he belonged to the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool and served as treasurer. Over the years, Henry and Iris travelled to Hawaii and Florida with his eldest brother, Ted and wife, Evelyn and made several trips to Calgary and Winnipeg to visit family. He was a big fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, making several trips to Regina with friends to enjoy home games, and watching away games on television. Henry was predeceased by his grandparents, Theodore and Sophie Wasylyshen, his parents, Wasyl and Oksana, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Peter and Katherine Korney and his brother, Ted. He is survived by his wife, Iris; sons, Ivan (Kathie) of Regina; Don (Lisa) and grandson, Zachary, of Canora; and James (Karen) of Saskatoon, and her son, Anthony of Calgary; his youngest brother, Ken Wasylyshen; sister-in-law, Evelyn Wasylyshen; numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
