Roy Carlson was born December 8th, 1945 in Swift Current Saskatchewan to Bernice (Wills) and Carl Carlson. He was the 2nd youngest of 5 children. Roy attended Elmwood Elementary school and later Beatty collegiate and finish his high school via correspondence classes. He worked in the oil fields near Swift Current and would eventually obtain his apprenticeship in welding through Kelsey Collegiate in Saskatoon. In 1969 Roy joined the Canadian military and served in Borden Manitoba, Baden Germany, Ottawa Ontario and Calgary Alberta. In 1983 Roy received the Governor General's award in Nursing and left the military with the rank of Sergeant. Roy continued his education in nursing taking classes through the University of Saskatchewan and finishing his master's degree with McMaster University. Roy finished his schooling when he obtained his Registered Nurse Practioner designation and continued in that field until he retired in 2008. Roy married his wife Bonnie-Jean in 1992 and moved to Yorkton in 1994. Together they would raise cattle and German Sheppard dogs while commuting from reserves in Saskatchewan and later Ontario. Roy loved his time in the north serving as Nurse in Charge in Pelican Narrows, Cumberland House, Norway Bay, Pikangikum and Poplar Hill. For holidays he would work in Nunavut, Arizona and Texas. He was dedicated to his field serving on the health care reform board and mentoring younger nurses in the field. Roy loved working on the farm, fixing fences, breaking horses and working with the cattle. His love of farming came at a young age as he would spend his summers helping on his uncle's farm. When he wasn't busy helping his uncle he could usually be found getting into trouble with his sisters, or out in the skating rink with the neighbourhood kids for an impromptu hockey game. Although he never excelled in sports he loved the Toronto Maple Leafs and Saskatchewan Roughriders and never missed watching a game. Roy is lovingly remembered by his wife Bonnie-Jean, his children Timothy, David and Erin, his grandchildren Rhyen and Rochelle Clifford, his sisters Grace Dix and Lavern Karlsen as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends Roy was predeceased by his sisters Maxine Dahl and Marlene Carlson Service Information
