Obituary of Dorothy Wood

WOOD - Mrs. Dorothy Wood, late of the Jubilee Care Home in Foam Lake, widow of Wm. Harvey Wood of the Yorkton district, passed away on Sunday, March 6th 2016. She was 94 years of age. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 9th 2016 at 2:00pm from Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Interment will be in the Yorkton City Cemetery. Dorothy's legacy is one of kindness, generosity, hard work and old-fashioned values. Born Dorothy Thelma Read, her parents raised her and her siblings to be respectful and responsible. All four of their children contributed to the war effort in England, Dorothy worked in a munitions factory. When she came back to Canada she lived in Prince Albert and spent a lot of time with her nieces Diana and Brenda. She worked for the Prince Albert Fair Board and met Harvey at a convention in 1953. They married in 1954 and sons Douglas were born in 1955 and Grant in 1956. Dorothy worked beside Harvey delivering calves, hauling hay and shovelling grain. They were best friends. In addition to the Read family, she also embraced the Wood family and all of her in-laws and out-laws as she called them. She loved family gatherings, with lots to eat and drink and simply celebrating being together. The more the merrier as she used to say. There was always room at the table for an unexpected guest. The door was always open, and neighbours, family and friends were always welcomed. Dorothy and Harvey developed very close friendships through the Yorkton Fair Board and the Sweet Adelines. She and Harvey were planning on retiring after one more season when Harvey passed away. A part of Dorothy also died that day. Dorothy decided to stay on the farm and lived there until failing health required her to move in the spring of 2014. Over the years she did a bit of travelling, going back to England to see friends and family that she had not seen since the war. She toured New England and the Maritimes and had lunch at the Top of the World Restaurant at the World Trade Centre in New York. She spent the longest day of the year in Anchorage with her sister Marj and brother-in-law Gerry and nephew Mike and then thoroughly enjoyed the ferry ride down to Vancouver. Dorothy travelled to Vancouver Island to see her grandchildren Devon and Glenn several times and was a very proud Grandma when they both graduated from university. She regularly travelled to Saskatoon to see her grandsons, Scott and Eric and to watch them grow into young men. Dorothy enjoyed the farm, spending many hours on the deck watching the wildlife walk through or fly over the yard. She thoroughly enjoyed making coffee, munchies or lunch for Craig and his crew when they were working at the farm. Dorothy very much enjoyed visits from the neighbours, plus the Read and Wood families. These were the highlight of her day. She was an avid reader and frequented the public library at least once a week to get new books to read. Dorothy was a devout Christian. She talked to God all the time, thanking Him for this and that. Her church family was very dear to her. Dorothy is very fondly remembered by her son Doug (Dale), his children, Devon and Glenn, and their mother (Glenys), and her son Grant (Karen) and their children Scott (Heather) and Eric.
