Obituary of Eleanor "Jean" Schab

Mrs. Eleanor "Jean" Schab aged 89 years of the Canora Gateway Lodge, formerly of Yorkton and Quinton, widow of John Schab, passed away on October 3, 2015. The funeral service will be on Friday, October 9, at 2:00p.m. at Westview United Church. In the early morning hours of Saturday October 3rd 2015, Eleanor Jean Schab passed away peacefully at Canora Gateway Lodge. Jean was born in Canora, September 13, 1926 to Mary Elizabeth (Miller) and John Fredrick Schafer. Her father John worked for the railway so their family lived in various communities throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Jean met John Alfred Schab and they were married May 27, 1946 at Lett, Sask. and they began their life together farming near Calder Sask. In 1956 Jean and John moved to Orcadia where they opened a General Store and Gas Station. The store became the heart of the community where many a conversation took place. They had no children of their own but nieces and nephews were always welcome to visit on weekends and summer holidays. The children loved to help in the store and pump gas. They built onto the store and Jean became the Postmistress. Jean was one of the postal services best customers as she loved to write letters expressing her views and opinions on issues dear to her heart. In August of 1970 the Post Office was closed in Orcadia and Jean was transferred to Quinton, Sask. She soon became actively involved with the church and the community. She loved to knit, crochet, and make quilts. Jean retired and in 2009 she moved to Yorkton. She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory, her sister Doreen Walper of Kindersley, SK; sister-in-law Edna Schafer (George) of Penticton BC; as well as many nieces and nephews.
