Obituary of George Popowich

POPOWICH - Mr. George Popowich of Yorkton, beloved husband of Lena Popowich entered eternal rest on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home with family at his side. He was 93 years of age. George S. Popowich was born on February 28, 1922 on the family farm in the Good Spirit district; a son to Sam and Anne Popowich. He was raised on the family farm and attending school in Black Poplar. Although his education did not go beyond grade school, he attained self-taught skills in animal husbandry, carpentry, mechanics, veterinary medicine and farming where he maintained over 100 head of cattle. George met the love of his life, Lena Shlahetka who became his wife of over 70 years. Together they operated a mixed farming operation until his 65th birthday when they retired and moved to Yorkton. Retirement gave them time to enjoy the outdoors with activities such as hunting, trapping and fishing. George enjoyed watching sports such as hockey on television and playing card games, especially his greatest love of card games - "Kaiser" (Troika). He was very competitive at cards and this kept his mind very sharp an alert until the very end. His health began to fail in spring of 2012 and in March, 2015 he settled in Jowsey House at the Yorkton Nursing Home. George was predeceased by his parents, Sam and Anne; his brothers Wasyl, John, Mike, Nick, Fred and Dan and his sisters Magda, Nellie, Mary and Pauline. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Lena; their children, Wayne (Ruth) Popowich and their children Shaundra (Jeff Ellis), Brian (Heather), Trisha (Ryan Hauber); Garry (Sonia) Popowich and their children Chad, Tyson and Trevor and eight great grandchildren. A Prayer Service was held on Monday, June 8, 2015 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. The Funeral Liturgy was held on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church with Rev. Father Raymond Lukie, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus and parish choir members. The cross bearer was Iris Ryczak and the epistle readers were Wayne and Garry Popowich. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Bryan Popowich, Ryan Hauber, Jason Popowich, Norm Gawryliuk, Peter Kucher and Kelly Popowich serving as the casket bearers.
