Obituary of Reuben Samuel Alberts

ALBERTS - Reuben Samuel Alberts of Melville, Saskatchewan beloved husband of Mavis Alberts, passed away peacefully in the early morning on May 25, 2015 at the age of 91 years. Reuben was born on March 27, 1924 in the Rockdell district of Saskatchewan, the third youngest of ten children born to Florence (nee Griffith) and Frank Alberts. He was raised on the family farm, received his education at Happy Centre School, and completed his grade 12 at St. Henry's School in Melville. As a young man, Reuben worked on his parents' farm. He enlisted in the Army during the Second World War and did his basic training at Orillia, Ontario. Reuben enjoyed many pastimes such as curling, hunting, fishing, hockey, playing cards, reading and attending district functions. He was an active member of the Happy Centre Club. On June 11, 1960, Reuben was united in marriage to Mavis, daughter of Jacob and Pauline Aichele. They were blessed with four children, Joanne, Darrell, Barb and Sheldon. Reuben and Mavis worked tirelessly together to establish a beautiful farm and loving home life for their children. They graciously hosted many family gatherings through the years, and Sunday suppers at the farm were a cherished custom. Reuben had a passion for farming that was rooted in his love of the land and belief in carrying on family tradition. He farmed the original Alberts homestead (est. 1902), which his son Darrell, and his family continue to farm. Reuben was an accomplished farmer and businessman. He took tremendous pride in watching his crops grow and flourish from seeding through harvest. Reuben and Mavis enjoyed travelling and made several trips to visit his son, Sheldon, and his family in Silver Spring, MD, as well as trips with family and friends to destinations in Canada and the United States. He looked forward each summer to fishing at Tobin Lake and Childs Lake. Reuben found greatest joy in watching his children and grandchildren grow, hearing about their adventures, and sharing in their accomplishments. He was so proud of each of them. In 1994, Reuben and Mavis built a home
