Obituary of Merv "Sonny" Famulak

FAMULAK - Mervin Peter Famulak known to all as "Sonny" husband of the late Sally Famulak entered his eternal rest at St. Paul Lutheran Home, on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at the age of 73 years. Sonny was born on July 31, 1941 at Melville, Saskatchewan, a son to Peter and Anne (nee Derek) Famulak of Melville. Sonny received his education at East End School, completing his education at St. Henry's High School. While attending school, he was involved in playing football, baseball and hockey. In 1960 he began his career with the CNR, first as a CallBoy then as an Office Clerk retiring in 1996, after 36 years of service. On September 7, 1963, Sonny was united in marriage to Sally Pillipow at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. Sonny and Sally resided in Melville and were blessed with son Donavon. Hockey was always Sonny's passion. He was the best defenseman that Melville Millionaires had in the late 50's and in the league at that time. He was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs but he turned it down due to his dedication to his family and job. Being a Millionaires All Star Defenseman and involved with almost all facets of the game Sonny began coaching on and off from 1970 to 1986. He also scouted for many teams. Even in later years, he would offer his knowledge and expertise to young players. He also was involved with the Melville Bingo Association in the mid 80's, the Regional Park authority and past President of the Melville Country Club. He was special to all who knew him. On July 7, 2006 his beloved wife Sally passed away. Sonny continued to resided at home with Donavon until health issues forced him to become a resident at St. Paul Lutheran Home. Predeceased by his parents, Peter and Anne; his wife Sally and sister Mary St. Michael. Sonny leaves to cherish his memory son Donavon (Cindy) of Melville; brothers, Andrew (Joyce) Famulak of Melville and Ed Famulak of Comax, BC; sister Florence (Wally) Hook of Regina; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Arrangements were by Bailey's Funeral and Cremation Care, Melville.
