Obituary of Virginia Wereschuk

WERESCHUK The family of Virginia Wereschuk sadly announce her passing at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on April 21, 2015 with her daughter Kendra by her side. Virginia was born on her family farm south of Wroxton, Saskatchewan on October 11, 1933. She was the daughter of the late Eli and Mary Eftoda who immigrated to Canada in 1898 and 1899 respectively. Her mother died on February 27, 1943 and her father passed away in December of 1947. In 1946 Virginia moved to the family farm of her older sister Mary (Peter) Sauchuk who raised her until she married Kenneth Wereschuk on November 18, 1951. They were married at the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church in MacNutt, Saskatchewan. Kenneth David Wereschuk was born on his family farm in the MacNutt district on May 26, 1926. Virginia and Ken farmed in MacNutt until 1957 when the couple was forced to leave the farm due to repeated crop failures. They then moved to Winnipeg where Ken worked as a carpenter until 1959 at which time they moved to Yorkton. Virginia and Ken were married for 30 years until Ken became ill and passed away on September 26, 1981 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Virginia and Ken were blessed with two children, Reginald Kenneth on March 30, 1955 and Kendra Lynn on June 6, 1959. In October of 2005, Virginia's son Reg who lived in Edmonton, Alberta became ill with cancer and after a courageous fight, passed away on February 7, 2006. Virginia spent several years working as a travel agent in Yorkton which gave her the opportunity to visit many destinations around the world. She was a long time member of the Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton. She was also a faithful member of the Ukrainian Women's Association Olena Pchilka Branch in Yorkton. She served on the executive in several positions including Treasurer, Member of Board Control First Vice, President during 2005 & 2006, Promin Representative and a very dedicated Elder Sister. She was a very skillful leader and pleasant person to work with. Virginia is survived by her daughter Kendra (Gary) de Vries who reside in Yorkton, SK and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Ken (September 26, 1981), son Reg (February 7, 2006), father Eli Eftoda (December, 1947), mother Mary Eftoda (February 27, 1943), brothers George (October 14, 1995), John (March 25, 1998), Ted (July 29, 1983), Walter (March 15, 1991), James (September 10, 1943), Mary (April 14, 2010), Peter (July 1, 1982), Nick at 4 - 6 years of age, an infant brother Nick at birth and an infant sister Mary at birth. The family would like to thank all of the people who were part of Virginia's life and kept her in their prayers. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. Virginia was a loving mother and best friend. A Prayer Service was held on Sunday, April 26, 2015 and the Funeral Service on Monday, April 27, 2015 at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky officiating. The responses were led by Gerald Yaholnitsky & Parish Choir Members. The cross bearer was Virginia Allen. Serving as an honour guard were members of the Ukrainian Women's Association, Olena Pchilka Branch. The interment took place in the Garden of Crucifixion at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with James Eftoda, Roy Allen, Peter Eftoda, Ron Boychuk, Elmer Eftoda and Wally Matweyko serving as the casket bearers. Memorials honouring Virginia's life may be made to the Health Foundation, Sunrise Health Region for the purchase of a CT Scanner.
