SCHAPPERT - Mr. George Schappert, beloved husband of Phyllis of Churchbridge passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at the Langenburg Centennial Care Home surrounded by his family. George was born on January 18, 1930 at the family farm in the Rothbury district. He was the son of Philip and Katherine Schappert. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. He received his education at the Rothbury School. He married Phyllis Rathgeber on June 12, 1952 and they enjoyed 62 years of married life. They were blessed with three children: two daughters and a son. He was actively involved with different organizations within the community. He was on the local Wheat Pool board and served as a director of the Churchbridge Co-op. His faith was very important to him and he spent many years on different committees within the church. George's whole life revolved around farming. He took over the family farm when he was in his early twenties and loved working the land. The farm evolved from a mixed farm, to a hog operation and then to grain. Eventually Randy joined the farm and under George's guidance, he was ready to take over when George retired. He loved reading and enjoyed following the news and politics. He would faithfully read the Western Producer cover to cover. Family gatherings were very important to him. One of his great loves was for his children and his grandchildren. Unfortunately as his Alzheimer's progressed, he lost his ability to fully enjoy his great grandchildren. George was predeceased by his parents, Philip and Katherine; his siblings: Minnie(Andrew) Laidlaw, Laura (Willy) Rathgeber, Annie (Lou) Schutz, Albert, Rudy and his brother in laws Rudolph Rathgeber and Norbert Schaan. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife Phyllis; his children and grandchildren : Donna Gilbert - Braydon (Christin), Stephanie; Gail (Hal) Zorn - Crystal, Megan, Kim, Allison, Jodie; Randy (Audrey) Schappert - Kyla (Dean) Evans, Jocelyn (Morgan) Griffin as well as three great-grandchildren: Charlie Evans, Nicole and Adam Griffin. He is survived by two sisters, Liz Rathgeber and Noreen Schaan and numerous nieces and nephews. We will remember him as a quiet caring man and cherish our time we had with him. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, March 9, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Churchbridge with Rev. Jeff Dul officiating. The Scripture Readers were Crystal Zorn and Kim Zorn. The organist, Vallery Putland led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty", "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "Precious Lord, Take My Hand". The eulogy was presented by Kyla Evans. The interment took place in the Garden of St. Matthew at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Lyle Schutz, Duane Popp, Ken Schutz, Claire Decock, Wayne Rathgeber and Craig Kaeding serving as the casket bearers.
