Obituary of Joan Hill

We with heavy heart and enduring remembrance mourn the passing of Joan Jackaleen (Tenney) Hill on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the age of 77 years. Joans heritage originated in the United States in 1614, the generation of her great grandparents Edgar and Ida May (Derosia) Tenney along with Grandparents Clarence & Rose (Kowalski) Tenney came to Canada in 1912 to raise their young family of Mabel, Howard, Elmer, Wilber, Ray and Vernon. Her father Wilber Tenney wed Evelyn (Claughton) and Joan was born in Unity, SK August 9, 1937 the eldest daughter of 3. She was raised on her parents farm near Carruthers, Sask. Along with sister Jean Duncalfe of Edmonton and brother Merle Tenney of Lloydminster, Sask. Joan early on worked hard helping her Dad with chores of the farm, driving horse teams, milking, stooking and also lent a hand with with all the everyday chores of living on a farm for that era. On May 10, 1953 she began a long caring and rewarding career as Nurses Aid in the Maidstone Union Hospital followed by Lashburn Union Hospital from 1957 to 1960. Along the way in 1956 she met a railroader William (Bill) Hill from Inglo, Manitoba. Careers kept them apart till Christmas 1958 when he asked for her hand, they were Wed at Maidstone United Church July 8, 1960 by reverend Pratt. In Jan. 1962 her daughter Debora was born and in 1964 her son Larry was born. Joan resumed her Nursing career in 1966 with a move to the Melville St. Peters Hospital, under direction of the Sisters of St. Martha. She held many fond memories of her co-workers on the ward and in cleaning, maintenance, and dietary, as well as Doctors and patients up to her retirement in 1994, a career span of 35 years. A significant accomplishment, Joan was proud to pass the Emergency Medical Technition Certification in 1981, being one of the 1st EMT units in the Melville Area, accepting calls for 10 years for the Melville Ambulance Association. As well she earned the certification of Special care Aid in 1984 learning it was important to care about patients as much as for them. Joan delivered for many years home Insulin shots up until Homecare being established. In spare time she sat on the Melville Ambulance Board, helped with the Sisters of St. Martha's Wall, St. Peters Bowling League and the United Church. In later years her creative side revealed in her Patchwork quilts, embroidered tablecloths, hooked rugs, knitting, canning, cooking and gardening. The days spent camping in the trailer with Bill and his hand that never let go made her Life complete. The loving moments of her life came with the birth of grandsons Kiefer and Maverick sons of Debora and Murray Blazieko of Melville and grandson Trace son of Larry and Patsy Hill of Red Deer, Alberta. Joans love of old time music was prominent in her life, in her dancing, toe tapping, and the way she knew every word to every song. Her random acts of kindness revealed often like when she sang" We'll Meet Again" to a fellow cancer Patient who she befriended while staying in the Regina Cancer Lodge in the spring of 2013. Joan will be remembered for her Courage and Will to Persevere thru her Parkinsons and Cancer Disease.
