Obituary of Fred Achtemichuk

ACHTEMICHUK - It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend. We will miss his caring and smiling presence. Fred was born on August 4, 1916 in Rhein, Saskatchewan and attended Kitzman School until grade 8. Fred worked on his family's farm and enjoyed playing baseball and going to dances and attending sports days as a young man. In 1944, Fred married Nell Zaharia and they joined his family's farm until 1948 when Fred and Nell moved to their own farm near Veregin, SK. In 1954, Fred and his family moved to Saskatoon where Fred attended barbering school and then moved to Yorkton, SK in 1955 where Fred established his barbering practice on Betts Avenue. In addition to barbering, Fred also worked as a Boiler man and Building Supervisor at the Court House on Darlington Avenue and the Saskatchewan Highway Building. Outside of work, Fred enjoyed gardening, golfing and being a great husband and dad. Fred retired in 1986 and became an avid golfer and gardener with Nell. Fred and Nell won the 2007 Yorkton in Bloom - Best Vegetable Garden, and 2008 Best Home Grounds - Front Yard and Best Vegetable Garden. Fred was always busy and enjoyed a long and happy life. Fred is survived by his wife Nell, his three children, Robert (Angie), Mavis (Gordon) and David (Karen) and his four grandchildren, Sasha, Dana, Emma, and Alex. Fred was predeceased by his siblings: John, Mary (Mendro), Bessie (Ketemer), Ann, Metro, Wasyl, Martha (Oystreck), Michael and George. A celebration of life was held on Saturday afternoon, January 17, 2015 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Center with Crystal Bailey B.Th. as the Celebrant with Robert Achtemichuk giving the reflections and remembrances of Fred's life. The musical Selections were "Amazing Grace" and "Morning Has Broken". The interment followed in the Garden of Gethsemane Yorkton Memorial Gardens with: Alex, Dana, Larry, Eddy, David Achtemichuk and Emma Truscott serving as Casket Bearers. In memory of Fred Memorial Donations may be made to the East Central Health Foundation for the north unit of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home.
