Obituary of Alfred Slaferek

SLAFEREK - Mr. Alfred Slaferek, husband of Ethel of Yorkton, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 28th 2014 at Jowsey House, Yorkton & District Nursing Home. He was 84 years of age. Alfred Alex Slaferek was born on February 7, 1930 on the family farm in the Otthon district; a son of Anton & Josephine (nee Novakowski) Slaferek. At an early age Alfred began what would be a life-long career in the welding trade. On November 18th, 1955 he was united in marriage to Ethel Cunyk at Hudson Bay. Alfred worked at Hudson Bay, then Estevan, before eventually returning to Yorkton, where he began employment at Parkland Iron Works. After that his welding career took him to Ram Industries. It was here that he excelled in his work, so much so that he earned the nickname `Doctor` from Leon Malinowski himself, as there was nothing around the plant that Alfred could not fix or make. He was considered a master welder. His fellow workers at the plant affectionately called him `Oscar`. Alfred eventually set out on his own, establishing `Slaferek Welding`, a business he operated for a number of years until his retirement. His hobbies included spending time at Good Spirit Lake, he enjoyed riding his bike, and he enjoyed the game of golf during the summer months, and he was especially adept at looking for lost golf balls. His family was also a big part of his life. Predeceased by his mother & father; sisters Lucy Hudy and Josephine Nagy; brothers Philip, John, Henry, Sam, Joe and Charlie; and by a granddaughter, Jaidan. He is survived by his wife Ethel of Yorkton; son Rick (Trina) of Qu`Appelle; daughter Jackie of Regina; granddaughters Teagan & Cassie; and grandsons Nicholas & Michael.
