Obituary of Fred Halyk

Frederick Edward Halyk was born April 7, 1924 on the family farm near Birmingham, SK. Fred was the eighth of thirteen children born to Mike B. and Barbara (Pearl). He received his education at Wilton (Birmingham) School. His early employment included working as a section man and on the extra gang for the CNR, near Saskatoon. His physical strength was something to behold. Early in life, he was given the nick-name "Powerful". In 1966, Fred moved back to Melville and began working in the CNR car shops. Due to his failing eyesight, he retired in 1984, at the age of 60. After his father's death in 1976, Fred lived with his mother for two years, until her passing in 1978. His last place of residence was the beautiful Caleb Village in Melville. Fred was a skilled gardener growing prize-winning vegetables and flowers. He was in tremendous physical condition, walking downtown daily until his 89th year. He was an active member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Fred entered his eternal rest peacefully on Friday, August 29, 2014 at St. Peter's Hospital in Melville at the age of 90 with family at his side. Fred was predeceased by his parents Mike and Barbara, sisters: Katharine, Annie (Henry) Heppler, Alice (William) Feduk and Nettie Kozakavich, seven brothers William (Tillie), Nick, Joseph (Stella), Peter, Max (Edith), Nestor, Lloyd and sister-in-law Margaret. He leaves to cherish his memory one brother Bunny, a brother-in-law Alex and sisters-in-law Lillian and Betty, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
