WINNITOWY - William (Bill) Winnitowy beloved husband of Mrs. Jean Winnitowy of Yorkton, Sk. passed away July 30, 2014 at the age of ninety. Bill was born near Wroxton on March 28, 1924 to Phillip and Annie Winnitowy. In 1928 the family moved to Yorkton where Bill attended Victoria School, Sacred Heart School and St. Joseph's College. In 1941, at the age of 16, Bill enlisted with the Canadian Army and served as a Gunner with the 19th Canadian Army Field Regiment 2nd Corps 63rd Battery and saw action in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Upon returning from Europe, Bill met Christine Kuryluk (d: 1993) and the two were married on June 19, 1948. They made their home in Yorkton raising three children. Bill's work career included Insurance Sales and Secretary Manager of the Yorkton Exhibition Association. Bill was very active in the community, making lifelong friends through his involvement with Kinsmen (K40) where he was honoured with a Life Membership in 1991, The Royal Canadian Legion, Rotary International, Deer Park Golf Club, Saskatchewan Lung Association, Bowlers Association of Canada and many other volunteer activities. Bill held numerous executive positions in the multiple organizations to which he belonged and was a respected leader and volunteer in the community. Bill also loved to socialize with friends aka ‘The Gang', whether it was at Crystal Lake, Palm Springs or in a backyard - playing cards, golfing, eating and dancing the night away. In 1999 Bill was inducted into the Yorkton Sports Hall of Fame where he was recognized for his lifelong contributions to the sporting community, specifically the sport of bowling. As the first Master Bowler and Teaching Master in Saskatchewan, Bill travelled extensively around Western Canada giving bowling clinics. Bill had an illustrious bowling career and coached and instructed many youth bowlers over the decades. In August 2003, Bill married Jean Ewanchuk. Over the years they enjoyed tending to their bountiful garden and manicured yard, golfing, bowling, bus tours and spending time at the casino - enjoying the entertainment and the games. Bill was predeceased by his parents, first wife, Christine, brothers, John and Mike and sisters, Marina and Olga. Left to celebrate his life is his wife, Jean; sons, Dale (Vicky) and Randy (Suzanne) and grandson Niklas; daughter, Lori; stepson, Michael (Helga) Zbeetneff; stepdaughter, Cindy (Randy) Kozak; sister, Mary Kozak; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to express our deepest appreciation to all those who provided care for Bill in the last couple of years, especially at the Yorkton Nursing Home. Bill's family and friends will cherish his memory and remember him as a proud husband and father, soldier, hard worker, volunteer and an excellent Hola player! Funeral Services were held Monday, August 4, 2014 at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Fr. Methodius Kushko, C.Ss.R. of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church officiating. Responses were sung by Ed Pindus and members of the parish choir. Tributes and Words of Remembrance were given by Dale, Randy & Lori Winnitowy. The Legion Tribute Service was conducted by members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Gen. Alexander Ross Branch #77. Special music was played by friend, Peter Kobylka. Dale Winnitowy, Randy Winnitowy, Kenn Kozak Michael Zbeetneff and Randy Kozak served as the casketbearers. Interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery. Vichnaya Pamyat! Eternal Memory!
