Obituary of Jacob "Jack" Schaan

SCHAAN - Mr. Jacob (Jack) Schaan of Langenburg Care Home and formerly Churchbridge, beloved husband of Martha Schaan passed away peacefully on July 17, 2014 at the age of 96 years and 5 months. Jack was born in Landestreu, Austria on Feb 3, 1918 and immigrated to Canada with his family in the MacNutt area. He met the love of his life Martha Schrader and they were married on May 24, 1942. (They just celebrated 72 years of marriage.) Together they farmed in the Beresina district for 60 years. Their union was blessed with 7 children, 21 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. Jack's faith was very important to him. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was a life - long member of the Lutheran Laymen's League. He was on many boards with the church. He sang in the church choir with his beautiful tenor voice. He also enjoyed curling, playing cards and wood work. He really loved his grandchildren. Jack's passion was farming and carpentry. He could fix almost everything. He was called "Jack of all trades". His favourite saying was "It is good enough". Jack leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife Martha, sons Harold (Elaine) & family, Ralph (Sandra) & family, Dale (Eleanor) & family, Glen (Wendy) & family, daughter's Lucille (Bob) & family, Barbara (Tim) & family. Jack was predeceased by his mother Maria, stepfather Jacob Becker, inlaws Otto and Mathilda Schrader, brothers in law Gordon Porter & Eldon Schrader, daughter Janet Marcia & granddaughter Brianna Schmuland, both in infancy, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. A Service of Comfort was held on Sunday, July 20, 2014 and the Funeral Service was held on Monday, July 21, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Churchbridge with Rev. Jeff Dul officiating. A duet was shared by Alice Johnson and Karen Stevenson. The organist, Alice Johnson led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, "I Know That My Redeemer Loves", "Nearer My God To Thee" and "Lord Take My Hand and Lead Me". The interment took place in the Garden of St. Matthew at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Bryce Schmuland, Cordell Schaan, Bryan Sveinbjornson, Cecilia Mryglod, Blaine Schaan and Chad Schaan serving as the casket bearers. Memorial tributes in Jack's memory may be made to Lutheran Hour or Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund.
