WEICK - Mrs. Meta Weick, a resident of Westhaven Manor in Langenburg, widow of Bert Weick went to be at home with her Lord on Saturday, July 12th, 2014, just 7 days shy of her 95th birthday. Meta Luise Weick was born on July 19, 1919 in the Springside district of Saskatchewan, the third child in a family of twelve born to Julianna (nee Pedde) and William Werner. She was christened on August 10, 1919 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Springside. Her growing up years were in the Springside district and she attended Cross Roads School. On December 29, 1936 she was united in marriage to Bert (Berthold) Weick at the farm of her parents in the hayloft of the newly built barn. They farmed on the Weick homestead from 1936 until 1947. To this union were born five children, Nina, Myrna, Carol, Gordon. The family moved to a farm north of Churchbridge and child #5, David, was born. The family belonged to the Baptist Church in Springside, and then the Church of God in Churchbridge. Meta witnessed many changes in the world, from the building of gravel highways to pavement, the effects of World War II, telephones, from alladin to coal oil lamps to 32 volt lights to electricity, cell phones, TV, computers & the internet. Farming with horses to the huge modern day equipment. Meta was an avid gardener, always having enough to can 52 jars of every fruit & vegetables for the growing family (one per week). She was also very involved with farming chores etc. There are many stories about the milking machine, the metal wheel tractor, haying, wooden spoon under the front seat, horses & van, dressing baby David on the way to church on Sundays, chopping up kindling, musical instruments, stripping feathers for quilts, and the one about "Bert are the wheels straight." In 1976 Meta & Bert built a home in Churchbridge, there the family shared many gatherings, a stop for many travellers. There too a huge garden and the most colorful display of lillies were grown. Living in town gave them free time to enjoy camping & fishing, and for Meta, sewing & quilting. All grandchildren have a quilt and most great grandchildren on graduation. Her last quilt for Heather is at the quilters now. Meta was also very involved with the Pennock School Board, 4H clubs, sewing, ceramics, garden & agricultural shows, housing board; she had received a volunteer recognition award in 2003, and was inducted into the Saskatchewan 4H Hall of Fame in 2010. She was also sent to a native reserve to teach sewing and health with/under the direction of the University of Saskatchewan. Meta managed to stay in her own home with help from her family after Bert's death in April of 1998. In June of 2012 Meta went to live at West Haven Manor in Langenburg where she received excellent care and for that her children are very grateful to the staff.
