JUBA - Andy Juba, longtime Yorkton resident, widower of the late Millie Juba, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2014 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 89 years of age. Andy was born on March 25, 1925 in Hubbard, Saskatchewan; a son of Annie (nee Borys) and Alex Juba. Andy was raised on the family farm in the Kelliher district. In 1932 the family moved to Yorkton where Andy received his schooling. When WW II broke out Andy joined the navy at the age of 17, in February of 1943, after his basic training, Andy was stationed in the North Atlantic on a corvette, crisscrossing the ocean with five other ships, escorting and protecting 30 to 40 merchant ships carrying ammunition and food supplies overseas. Andy did this until the war ended, after the Atomic Bomb attack in August of 1945. Andy was sent home on leave and received his dis-charge in October of 1945. On May 24th 1947 he was united in marriage to Mildred (Millie) Lewis. They had one son, Glenn. Andy worked for Smith Fruit, City Dairy, and drove truck for CN Express for 10 years. For the next 28 years he was a salesman for Robin Hood Flour Mills. While working for Robin Hood he also farmed for 12 years, taking over the farm after his father-in-law retired. Andy was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, first joining in 1946. He served on the executive on several occasions: from 1955-58 as bingo chairman; 1987 - 2002 he was the 'house man', looking after the maintenance and the heating & cooling systems of the building. He used his own vehicle on several occasions to haul empty beer and pop bottles back to the depot. In 1995 he was awarded the Legionnaire of the Year award as well as receiving a Certificate of Merit. In 1999 he was bestowed a Life Membership. In 1988 Andy became a regular with the Legion Color Party, and faithfully served by attending parades, funerals, Legion functions, etc. He was also active in delivering wreaths & poppies to businesses in the area. Andy did countless volunteer hours at the Hall, running rummy & cribbage tournaments and various sports pools. He was also a member of Northwest Commercial Travelers, first joining in 1961, and a 48 year member of the Associated Canadian Travelers, serving as President in 1983-84. He was a life member of the Lung Association of Saskatchewan. He was also a member of the Army, Navy and Air Force club, and a long time member of the Deer Park Golf Course and the Yorkton Curling Club, serving on both executives. Predeceased by his father Alex in 1958; mother Annie in 1962; his wife Millie on February 12, 2013; brothers Steve (1928), Bill (1984), John (1986), Alec (1998); sisters Evelyn (1985), Mary (1996), and Kay (2010). He will be sadly missed by his son Glenn and wife Donna of Wetaskiwin, AB; grandsons Andrew & Carsen. Also brothers Mike & Peter, numerous nieces, nephews, and his many other relatives and friends. The funeral service was held on Thursday, May 15, 2014 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Ken Buchan officiating. Son Glenn gave the eulogy. Organist, Amanda Buhler led the congregation in the singjng of the hymns 'In the Garden', 'Church in the Wildwood', and 'Those Hearts That We Have Treasured'. members of the Royal Canadian Legion, General Alexander Ross Branch #77 attended and performed the Legion Tribute Service. The interment took place in the Garden of Memories Columbarium with son Glenn and grandsons Andrew & Carsen serving as the urnbearers.
