Zaharia - Mrs. Katie Zaharia entered eternal life on April 6,2014 at the Yorkton District Nursing Home at the age of 100 years. Katie was born on December 4,1913 in the Rhein District to George and Yustina (nee Kurowsky) Wowk. Katie was united in marriage to Sam Zaharia on Febuary 14, 1932. During their marriage they were blessed with 6 children. The couple farmed in the Hampton District until their retirement in 1971 but continued to live on the family farm until Sam's passing. In 1987 Katie moved to Yorkton and lived in her own home. In 2012 Katie entered the Yorkton District Nursing Home until her passing. Katie enjoyed playing ball when she was younger, going to dances, playing cards, shopping and visiting with family and friends. Katie always looked forward to family gatherings. She had a good sense of humour. She was a good cook and a great baker (oh those donuts). She always had beautiful flowers and large gardens. In her younger days she handmade flowers and bouquets for weddings and special occasions. Katie and Sam spent many years hand sewing quilts for children and grandchildren; they made sure no one was ever cold. Katie always had a story to tell from trips to Disneyland, her adventures in B.C. or working with family on the farm. Katie was predeceased by her husband Sam (1987), her daughters Alice (1984) and Evelyn Jane (2009), son Donald (2004), son-in-law Keith (1994) and daughter-in-law Helen (1995), sisters Molly, Annie, Nellie, Alice, Eva, Mary and brother Mike. Katie is survived by her daughters Dianna Shorter of Yorkton, Carol (Peter) Brown of Summerland B.C., son Mike (Thelma) Zaharia of Kelowna B.C., sisters Lena Mandzuk and Patty Stefiuk and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Prayers was held on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre and the funeral service on Friday, April 11, 2014 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Father Rodion Luciuk of St. Mark's Orthodox Church officiating. The cantor, Moira Stoll led in the singing of the responses. Serving as the crossbearer was Les Reimer. The interment took place at St. Mary's (Boychuk) Cemetery with Allan Tkachuk, Kelly Shorter, Tyler Gelowitz, Mark Reimer, Mervin Adam and Garry Miller serving as the casket bearers.
