Obituary of Gerald Loewen

A memorial folder from the funeral service may be printed under the "Memories" tab, then choose "Memorial Program". Gerald was born on the family farm in the Pebble Lake District. He was the 3rd child of Jake and Neta Loewen. Brother Henry and sister Erna along with Gerald helped welcome Clara, Hilda and Jack into the family. The kids were very close and certainly kept their Mom and Dad on their toes! Gerald attended the one room school house at Pebble Lake. He usually rode his horse or took the buggy and sometimes he walked. He did enjoy school especially for the lifelong friends he made. I'm thinking those boys enjoyed school more than their teacher did from the stories we heard! When Henry died while preparing to go overseas Gerald quit school to work the farm with his Dad. It's where he always meant to end up circumstances just had him take that step a little earlier than planned. In 1951 Gerald readied his Mom and Dad's old house out on the N.W. of 6 for his new bride, Edna Grant. They planned to wed Oct.30th but first he drove down to Orkney to ask for her hand in marriage. Now that's class! In the summer of 52 they lost their home and all their possessions when their house burnt down. Gerald's Dad found them a 2 room house to move in so Gerald established a new yard closer to the road on 6. They lived in that 2 room house a couple years entertaining lots of people plus bringing their first baby Linda into that home. A few years later Gerald built a new house on 6 with the help of his neighbours. More entertaining and more babies Shelly, Sue and Grant. Around 1967 the Loewen brothers and their Dad played musical" houses". Jake moved to town, Gerald moved to Jakes and Jack moved to Gerald's. And they did it in one day! Gerald continued to grain farm and usually having a few chickens in the hen house, always having horses to ride and moving from milking a few cows to cows and calves to a larger feedlot operation. When his brother Jack joined Gerald on the farm they started The Loewen Brothers' farms and International equipment is what they used. In 1969 the International equipment company did a magazine article about their feedlot. We've proudly hung on to that copy. Gerald even got flown down to Minneapolis for the International Equipment convention. Gerald sold the farm land but kept the acreage until they moved into town 2 years ago. After selling the land Gerald had a lot more time for hunting and fishing and of course watching Toronto play… Blue Jays and the Maple Leafs. He even got to go to a Blue Jays home game. Gerald especially liked the extra time he had to spend with his grandkids and his great grandkids. Gerald was a husband, a Dad, a grandpa and a great grandpa. He was a friend to all. We are so blessed to have had you in our lives. Miss you so much Love you more Dad Service Information Saturday, December 21st, 2013 2:00pm, St. Andrew's United Church Interment Details
