WINTONYK - Katherine Wintonyk, resident of Malinowski House of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home passed away on Monday, December 2, 2013 following a lengthy period of failing health. She was 90 years of age. Katherine was born on March 25, 1923 in the Calder district of Saskatchewan; the daughter of Anton and Bella (nee Peleshytyk) Shymko. She was raised on the family farm and received her schooling at Mostetz School. On October 27, 1940, Kay was united in marriage to Michael Wintonyk at St. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Stornoway. The couple farmed and raised their family in the Stornoway district. Following 36 years of farming, the couple retired to Yorkton in 1976. Kay had been a member first of the parish of St. Peter & Paul in Stornoway and later of Holy transfiguration in Yorkton. Kay was an individual who knew the value of hard work. She worked alongside Michael in all aspects of the farm; she kept a large garden and always had a bountiful vegetable harvest. She was proud of her flower beds which she carefully tended. In her spare moments, Kay enjoyed knitting & crocheting as favourite pastimes. She was an excellent cook and always had fresh baking when family and friends dropped in. Kay was above all a people person, she greatly enjoyed the company of friends who came to visit. She was a devoted wife, mother & grandmother who took great interest in the lives of her family. After Michael's passing in 1983, Kay continued to maintain her own home until she became a resident of the Anderson Lodge in 1996, and later to the Malinowski House after the closure of Anderson Lodge. She leaves to cherish her memory her two sons and a daughter: Boris (Judith) Wintonyk of Oakville, ON and their sons, Geoffrey & Michael; Cynthia Wintonyk of Yorkton and her two daughters Gayla (Chad) Dionne and their daughter, Tessa, and Michelle; and Miles Wintonyk of Stornoway and his son Michael. Also two brothers: Walter (Violet) Shymko of Calder, and Orest (Loretta) Shymko of Thunder Bay and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, Anton & Bella; her husband Michael; her son Mervin in 2008; and by her brother Mike Shymko and sister-in-law Clara Shymko.
