Obituary of Lorne Sakundiak

Mr. Lorne Sakundiak, beloved husband of Olga of Yorkton passed away peacefully in the morning hours of July 29, 2013. Lorne was born on March 13, 1935 in Buchanan, SK to Metro & Nettie (nee Kuzmar) Sakundiak. Lorne is the 2nd eldest of 7 children. He attended Dydland school for his early years then continued his education in Buchanan. He completed an automotive mechanics course at Muskers Engineering in Winnipeg. He worked as a mechanic at Slogoski's Garage in Buchanan. On October 14, 1956, Lorne was united in marriage to Olga Diakow in Holy Ghost Church in Buchanan. They began their life together in Benito, MB. where Lorne worked in Scoutan's Garage from 1956-63. In 1963 Lorne and Olga moved to Yorkton, SK where Lorne built their family home. Between 1966-68 they adopted 2 children; a son Laurie Michael and a daughter Cheryl Lynn. In 1971 Lorne began a new career at Logan & Stevens Constructions LTD, where he worked at various sites around the province for 25 years. Lorne joined the Knights of Columbus when they lived in Benito, MB. He became a member of the Yorkton Branch No. 5182 around 1963. During this time he also became a 4th degree Knight, a position he held until the present time. He joined the Brotherhood in 1987, and also served on numerous Eparchial positions. Lorne also held a seat on the Catholic School Board. Lorne enjoyed all his volunteer work, clubs and organizations far too numerous to mention and did not hesitate to share his time with those around him. Lorne enjoyed his time at the cottage at Good Spirit Lake, fishing, camping, entertaining, and relaxing whenever possible. He loved singing in the St. Mary's Choir, golfing and gardening. He always enjoyed a challenge and accepted many building projects long after his retirement in 1996. His skills as a carpenter were well known by all who knew him. His dedication and passion showed through in all his endeavours and he never spent a dull moment on this earth, but yet managed to find time for his large loving family. His laugh, smile, and kindness will be missed by everyone he met. Lorne was predeceased by his parents, Metro and Nettie Sakundiak. He will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Olga, son Laurie (Regina), daughter Cheryl (Saskatoon). He also leaves to mourn his 4 sisters and 2 brothers, Lorna Brodziak of Preeceville, Marge Sakundiak of Fort Smith NWT, Phyllis Rainey (Barry) of Edmonton, Gloria Lischynski (Danny) of Yorkton, Ivan Sakundiak (Joan) of Buchanan, Joseph Sakundiak (Mildred) of Calgary, sister-in-law, Lena (Cliff) Holt of Saskatoon, brothers-in-law, Ed (Charlotte) Diakow of Rama, Rudy (Arlene) Diakow of Saskatoon. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbors, friends, coworkers, and 9 Godchildren. Prayers were held on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 preceded by the Holy Rosary led by members of the Knights of Columbus and Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood. Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Thursday, August 1st at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Fr. Peter Pidskalny, C.Ss.R., Rev. Father Ray Lukie, C.Ss.R. and Most Rev. Bishop Emeritus Michael Wiwchar, C.Ss.R. as Concelebrants. The responses were led by Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita and parish choir members. The cross bearer was Kevin Sakundiak and the epistle reader was Gerald Nieckar. Members of the Knights of Columbus, Father Delaere Council, Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree Brother Stanislaus Assembly and Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood, St. Volodymyr Branch participated in an Honour Guard and attended as a body. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Ivan Sakundiak, Joseph Sakundiak, Barry Rainey, Rudy Diakow, Danny Lischynski and Edward Diakow serving as the casketbearers.
