YAHOLNITSKY - Mr. Joe Yaholnitsky of Kamsack, formerly of Rhein and the Stornoway district passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the Kamsack Health Centre. He was 98 years of age. Joseph Yaholnitsky was born on April 3, 1915 in the Stornoway district, one of eleven children of Prokop and Anna (nee Tereschuk) Yaholnitsky. Joe grew up on the family farm and received his education at Stornoway and New Canadian Schools. Joe continued living and helping on the family farm throughout his life. He eventually took over the farm. His brother Victor also farmed in the district and they worked closely helping each other. In the early days he would work in the logging industry during the winter months. Joe enjoyed animals and always had his dog by his side and even one time he had a pair of bear cubs for a while. He raised livestock and other farm animals. He also enjoyed gardening and always grew more than he could use and happily gave the rest away. Later in life he was successful in growing fruit trees. He enjoyed having company and visiting with people, especially when family would return to the farm for a visit. Joe was very musical, being able to play guitar, violin and banjo. In his younger years he often played at many house dances. In the mid-eighties Joe sold the farm and built a house in Rhein where he lived until August, 2008 when he became a resident of Eaglestone Lodge in Kamsack. Predeceased by his parents; sisters Sadie Klimchuk, Lena Korzenowski and brothers Julian, Nick, Alex, John, Metro, Victor and Harry Yaholnitsky; he is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, July 8, 2013 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky of Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church officiating. The responses were led by Gerald Yaholnitsky and parish choir members. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Matthew at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with John Korzenowski, Dennis Sinnett, Morris Klimchuk, Dwaine Mason, Darren Korzenowski and Alex Lenko serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Joe may be made to the SK Lung Association or the Kamsack Nursing Home.
