PARFENUIK - Mr. Walter Parfenuik of Ituna Pioneer Lodge passed away peacefully on the 25th of May, 2013. He was 92 years of age. Walter was born the 28th of February, 1921 in the Hubbard district, a son of Sam and Anne (Michasiw). He received his education at Tarnoville School and remained on the family farm, working a few months on the railway and then at the Hubbard Hotel to supplement his farming income. In 1960, he sold his land and moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario, he obtained work with Ontario Lands & Forest as a Fire Tower Operator for 13 years and then got a job with Transport Canada as a Light House Keeper on Slade Island on Lake Superior, 15 miles by boat from civilization. Walter had a love of nature, the quietness and beauty of the island, which was abundant with different flowers and vegetation. A few steps from his cabin was the lake where trout fishing became a pastime for him. Walter retired in 1988 living in Thunder Bay and a year later moved to Saskatchewan to be closer with family and friends. He settled in Ituna and because of his health problems, he spent the last 5 years at the Ituna Pioneer Health Centre. In his retirement, Walter enjoyed driving around the area and seeing the changes in today's farming. He loved watching sports on T.V., particularly curling and baseball, occasionally betting a few dollars. He is survived by two sisters, Steffa Dorosh of Regina, Emma Parfenuik of Hubbard and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers; Mike, Metro, John and Bill; sisters Mary, Annie, Kay, Julie and Rosie. Prayers were held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 and the Requiem Divine Liturgy on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Exhaltation of the Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hubbard with Very Rev. Father Boris Kyba, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The cross bearer was Genelle Weir and the epistle reader was Kim Marshall. The interment followed in Holy Cross Parish Cemetery with Ted Psuirski, Bob Fraser, Lloyd Ullrich, Wilf Horvath, Donna Goring and Darlene MacMillan serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Walter may be made to the Holy Cross Cemetery Fund or the Ituna Pioneer Lodge.
