SMITH - Freda Smith, resident of Orkney House of the Yorkton & District Nursing Home went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 4, 2013. She was 95 years of age. Freda was born on June 13, 1917 at Rhein, Saskatchewan; third eldest child of Henry & Emelia Holstein. She grew up in the Evangelical Church at Rhein and at the age of thirteen Freda invited Jesus Christ into her life. She lived for Him until the day of her death. She attended Rhein School and at the age of seventeen left Rhein for Winnipeg. There she worked at the King George Isolation Hospital for two years. Freda then left Winnipeg and went to Toronto, where she entered Shaw's Institute, taking evening classes for a commercial course in sales. There she met and married her husband Lorne and together they ran a successful wholesale, retail fur business for several years. After Lorne's death in 1964, Freda had the burden of closing out the business. She then became affiliated with the firm "Thomas G. Gould Furs" where she worked until her retirement. Freda moved back to Yorkton in 1969 to care for her mother, which she did for six years until her death. Freda remained in Yorkton and spent many happy years at her home in Fisher Court. At the time of her passing she was a resident of Orkney House of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. Predeceased by her husband (1964); her father Henry Holstein (1968); her mother Emelia Hosltein (1975); a sister Emma Fenske (1982); brothers Edward (1983) & Fred (1983). Freda leaves to mourn her passing her sister, Anna Turr of Yorkton; and brothers Albert & John of Yorkton; numerous nieces, nephews, many relatives of the Smith family and her many friends in Yorkton and the Toronto area. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Pastor Steve Rosluk of First Baptist Church officiating. The eulogists were Vicci Stebner & Elaine Fenske. Organist, Amanda Buhler led the congregation in the singing of the hymns 'In the Garden', 'O That Will Be Glory', and 'Amazing Grace'. Soloist, Betty Fritzke sang 'It is Well With My Soul'. Honorary bearers were Vicci Stebner, Sadie Keast, Carla Rogney, Angie Tretiakl, Vicki Chaikowsky and Paulette Middleton. The interment took place in the Garden of St. Matthew with Gerald & Wayne Fenske, Leonard Jagobin, Joey Smith, Darren Fenske and Marvin Middleton serving as the casketbearers. Condolences may be left at baileysfuneralhome.com. Memorials were to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund. Arrangements were entrusted to Bailey's Funeral Home.
