A memorial folder from the funeral service can be printed under the "MEMORIES" tab, then choose "MEMORIAL PROGRAM". SPILCHEN - Mr. Metro 'Matt' Spilchen of Yorkton and formerly of the Good Spirit district entered eternal rest on March 26, 2013 at the Yorkton & District Nursing. He was 87 years of age. Metro John Spilchen was born on August 10, 1925 in the District of Whitesand, son of John and Pearl Spilchen (nee Byblow). He received his education at Black Poplar School and helped on the family farm. On October 18, 1949 Metro (Matt) was united in marriage to Olga Nestorik. The couple farmed in the Whitesand district and raised their two sons. Matt worked at Good Spirit Provincial Park and in 1987 semi-retired and moved to Spiritwood Acres. Matt hit his first golf ball at the age of 59 years and took quite a liking to the game. Soon after he purchased a golf cart and played almost daily, weather permitting. Many a round was played with his grandson Scott and friends at the clubhouse. In retirement he helped out on the golf course when needed. In the off season he enjoyed visiting with family and friends, groomed cross-country ski trails and skied. In 1999 Matt and Olga moved to their new home in Yorkton where he enjoyed meeting new friends and neighbours - still enjoying the odd round of golf. Plenty of time was spent visiting at the coffee shop. Upon Olga's passing in early March of 2010, Matt felt he wanted to move back to Yorkton. In June of 2010 he moved to Yorkton and took up residence at Yorkton District Nursing Home (Wallace House) where he reunited with his life-long neighbour and friend Mike Popowich. He leaves to cherish his memory sons Barrie (Eileen) of Good Spirit Acres and Maynard (Bernie) of Saskatoon; grandchildren Brad of Leduc, AB, Scott (Seonaid) of Regina, Vanessa (Shaun) of Warman, Kyle and Danielle of Saskatoon; great grandchildren Seth of Yorkton and Aubrey of Warman; brothers Bill, Mike, George, Peter, Paul; sisters Bea, Olga, Nettie and numerous nieces and nephews. Matt was predeceased by his parents John and Pearl; brothers Fred and Nick and sisters Mary, Ann, Pauline and Doris. The Prayer Service was held on Monday, April 8, 2013 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre. Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Father Peter Pidskalny, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led Ed Pindus & parish choir members. The crossbearer was Brody Spilchen and the epistle reader was Mark Namchuk. The interment took place in the Garden of Gethsemane at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Brad Spilchen, Scott Spilchen, Kyle Spilchen, Jason Spilchen, Garry Loutitt and Noland Nestorik serving as the casket bearers.
