Obituary of Bernard Roger Humeniuk

A memorial folder from the funeral service can be printed under the "MEMORIES" tab, then click "MEMORIAL PROGRAM". It is with deepest sympathy to announce the loss of Bernard (Bernie) Roger Humeniuk. Bernie passed away peacefully with his family at his side, on March 26, 2013. He was the son of Stanley and Lena (nee Gensoirowski) Humeniuk. Bernie was born June 20, 1944 at Falcon Lake, Manitoba. At the age of 6, his father sold the saw mill and moved the family to Maryfield, Saskatchewan. This is where Bernie spent his childhood years, growing up as the youngest of 4 boys on the family farm. The boys were very close in age and spent a lot of time together, getting into all kinds of mischief. Even as adults, the brothers would gather and enjoy laughing and joking about their early years on the farm. As a young man Bernie moved away from home to Weyburn, where he worked in the laundry department at the Weyburn hospital. He later returned to Maryfield, where he worked for the department of highways and helped out his parents on the family farm. He lived in Maryfield for many years, where he continued to farm with his dad as well as working for the R.M. and corral cleaning. During this time Bernie became father of two sons, Kevin and Jason. Bernie's greatest love in life was dancing. In 1995, this would be where he would meet his very special friend Doreen Pohorelic. They would go dancing every Saturday night and travel all around the country to do so. Bernie was a gentle, caring man with a witty sense of humour and was quickly embraced by Doreen's family. Bernie loved his new extended family very much and would have done anything for them. Bernie was also a very good gardener and each year he would plant a large garden. Bernie always liked to try out new seeds and watch them grow, but was best known for growing garlic. All of his coffee friends got a healthy supply of garlic, as he would usually have over a 100 bulbs to harvest. For the past 11 years, Bernie had been going for kidney dialysis 3 times a week. The support from dialysis staff and patients made those days a lot brighter. During this period Bernie became an avid fisherman and always had a fish story to tell. His favourite fishing spot was at the kid's cabin at Burgis Beach, where he would spend many beautiful summer days on the boat fishing and spending time with family. Left to mourn Bernie's passing and celebrate his life, are his loving friend and soul mate Doreen; sons: Kevin and Jason; brothers: Robert (Evelyn), Edward (Lois), and Larry (Marie). His extended family, step-daughter: Leanne (Dan); step-grandchildren: Chas (Dawson), Britney, Chelsey (Brett), Jordyn and Cody; Brother-in-law: Roman (Mary); sister-in-law: Irene (Andy); numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as many dancing and coffee friends; and his most dear friend and armchair buddy, who will miss him the most, Abbi. Bernie was predeceased by his parents, step-grandson Lucas Puchala and step-son Bradley Dratwa. Donations will be very appreciated, in memory of Bernie, to the Yorkton Hemodialysis Unit.
