Mary Ida Harrick (Statz), daughter of Jack Statz and Lena Kindrat was born on September 7, 1925 in the Goodeve, District. She was raised on the family farm in the R.M. of Garry with her two brothers, Edward and Howard, and her three sisters Elsie, Olga, and Lucy. Mary attended Maxwelton School. Mary married Paul Harrick on October 14, 1945 at the Goodeve Roman Catholic Church. They farmed in the Plainview District until 1949. In December, 1949 they moved to the Maxwelton District where they farmed until their retirement in 1986. They were blessed with thirteen children, four daughters; Paulette, Cindy, Lorraine, and Leona and nine sons Mervin, David, Jerry, Wayne, Randy, Ivan, Jeff, Warren, and Miles. Mary played an important role in the mixed farming operation. She was a very hard worker who never tired. No task was too large or small for her to tackle with a smile. Mary milked cows, worked with all of the livestock, helped with the stooking, maintained an enormous garden, baked amazing pastries, created delicious Ukrainian dishes, enjoyed visiting with friends, loved a good game of cards, and always had a table full of food and refreshments for everyone to enjoy. Mary and Paul moved to Melville in 1986. Mary loved to travel to her children's homes and to other destinations. Paul passed away on January 11, 1990 in Melville, SK. Mary continued to reside in Melville in their home, where she spent many hours in her bountiful vegetable garden and meticulously tending to her beautiful flower beds. Mary loved to play bingo with her close friend, Mary Wingerak. Mary spent countless hours babysitting her grandchildren. Her smile, laugh, and easy going manner welcomed everyone into her home. Mary was a member of the Plainview Church and St. George's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Melville. She was always willing to volunteer at numerous church and community functions. Due to health reasons Mary moved to Queen Street Manor in October, 2005. She continued to play bingo, socialise, make perogies, bake, and travel on day trips. She continued to maintain a few flower pots, which were her pride and joy to water and tend to daily. In the spring of 2010, Mary moved to a Personal Care Home in Ituna, SK. She enjoyed socialising, helping in the kitchen, and assisting in caring for the flower beds and flower pots. In July, 2011 Mary moved to St. Paul's Lutheran Home in Melville, SK, her final resting place. Mary unexpectedly and peacefully passed away on Friday March 22, 2013 at the age of 87 years.
