Obituary of Vincent Churko

Vincent Gerard Churko, beloved husband and soul mate of Zonnia (Lazurko) for over sixty years, passed away surrounded by his wife and family on Thursday, February 21st. He is the loving father to Vincie (Steve) Fallwell, Andrea (Steve) Hill, Karen Harding, Cindy (Bill) Hargreaves, Mary (Ron) Barron, and Jackie (Dean) Newkirk. He is lovingly remembered by eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Cecilia Churko and brother Lucas, and is survived by his sister Agnes Haines. Vincent spent his childhood on the family farm near Willowbrook, Saskatchewan and attended Cherryfield School. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, baseball and curling, and loved to read. He was passionate about the violin from an early age. Classical lessons began at the age of 12 with the Toronto Conservatory of Music. On October 20th, 1952 he married the love of his life, and he and Zonnia farmed hand in hand for 41 years. There were many days when, after a long day in the field, Vince would come home with a bouquet of wild flowers for Zonnia. After retiring from the farm in 1993, Vince got to spend more time with his violin. His love of music, and the joy it spread, brought awards and participation in bands and fiddle groups. His musical creativity was also expressed through violin making, making over 19 violins including one for each of his grandchildren, and his original composition "Zonnia's Waltz". Vince and Zonnia enjoyed their retirement sharing many happy memories with friends on camping trips, attending concerts and dances, playing cards, and visiting their children. He treasured his time playing with the Parkland Fiddlers, and the Regina Heritage Fiddlers. He enjoyed accompanying "The Kitchen Band", and until recently playing for the senior centre and nursing homes.
