ROMANUIK - It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Metro Romanuik, husband, father, grandfather and gido. Metro passed away peacefully on Monday February 11, 2013 with his family at his side. Metro was born on May 7, 1923 on the family farm in the Hamton district, the third child of Fred and Ann (nee Zederyko) Romanuik. He grew up on the farm and helped his brother run the family farm. Metro attended Mennofeldt School in the Hamton district for his elementary education. During the war years he attended the Yorkton Collegiate and completed his grade 12. In 1946, he decided to attend the Teachers Collegiate in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. The first school he taught at was Redlake Springs by Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. He later returned to the Hamton area where he taught at Vionne and Oleskow schools for seven more years and then decided to leave the teaching profession. While teaching at Oleskow school, Metro met his future wife, his "Sweetie", Adeline Kshanowski at a country dance. They were married on July 16, 1949 . Metro cherished his wife and they spent 63 wonderful years together. Together they raised a family of three, Ken, Reg and Lori. From day one, they did everything together, fishing, camping, picking mushrooms and berries, bowling and golfing. He also helped Adeline with her beautiful flower garden. In 1957, Metro and Adeline moved to Yorkton where Metro was employed by Macdonalds Consolidated for 30 years as an office clerk. Metro retired in 1986 and took up 'hobby' farming for a few years. Another favorite pass time in retirement was golfing, where one summer he golfed 75 rounds. He was given a life membership from the York Lake Golf Club. He was an active member at St. Andrews United Church and served on many committees. He was also a Roughrider fan, and a hockey fan. Metro and Adeline also loved to travel. Metro leaves to mourn and celebrate his life, his wife and soul mate, Adeline, his son Ken (Iris) and their children Mike Romanuik, Michelle (Kevin) Youmans and their children, Emily and Lucas, Carie (Lane) Stockbrugger and their children, Gabriella and Liam. His daughter Lori (Brian) Shumay and their children Kristen Shumay and Lindsay Shumay as well as numerous other family members and friends. Metro was predeceased by his son Reg, his parents Fred and Ann Romanuik, his mother and father in law, Albin and Kate Kshanowski, brothers John Romanuik and Zenon Romanuik, his sister Susan Chemuk, sisters in law, Alvina Kozmech, Ann Romanuik and Alice Romanuik, brothers in law, Fred Kozmech and Doug Clifton and nephew Larry Kozmech. Metro will be remembered by his family as a loving, kind, gentle, compassionate and generous man. He was not only a teacher to his students, he was a teacher to his family as well. He taught us about love, the importance of being a family, compassion, kindness and generosity. He cherished his family and he put them above all else. Spending time with family was most important to him and he enjoyed their visits. Metro loved and adored his grandchildren, Michelle, Carie, Mike, Kristen and Lindsay - he was proud of all their accomplishments and the fine people they are. Metro was also blessed with four great-grandchildren, Emily, Lucas, Gabriella and Liam who he loved dearly. We will honor him by continuing to live our lives as he did his. Love lasts forever…… The Funeral Service was held on Friday, February 15, 2013 at St. Andrew's United Church with Faye L. Greer officiating.
