Obituary of Victoria Ottenbreit

OTTENBREIT - Victoria Ottenbreit of Grayson, Sask. passed away peacefully on Feb.8, 2013 in Melville, Sask. at the age of 86 years. Victoria was born in Grayson to John and Elizabeth (nee Rieger) Mayer on April 3, 1926, the third oldest of twelve children. At the age of 15 she was out working as a hired hand and also helped her parents on the family homestead, who owned a resort area called Mayer's Beach at Crooked Lake operating a dance hall and pool room. In 1945, she married the love of her life Alois Ottenbreit and they were blessed with six children. They settled on a farm southwest of Grayson, but due to health reasons they moved to town in 1951. Here they started the meat market, which eventually grew into a successful family operation. Their sausage was well known and shipped many places. Victoria always had a garden to plant, weed and harvest; canning, cooking, and house chores of all types kept her very busy. She perfected her expertise at baking and cooking and delighting her family with her delicious baking that she would send home with everyone that came to visit. She had a heart of gold and was always willing to give a helping hand. You could never forget her kitchen with the oven always turning out loaves of bread, huge batches of cookies, donuts, buns, poppy rolls, and torta rolls. And on the top of the stove there was always a pot of cabbage rolls and perogies. Mom had invented recycling before the rest of the world had ever heard of the "green" recycling plan for mom saved just about everything and wasted nothing. She kept bows and wrapping paper salvaged from presents she received, wrappers from store bought items, empty cereal boxes and unlike other folks who might have saved such stuff but never used it, Mom did. Mom also worked for home care as a home care aid for many years. She was a very dedicated employee. In her later life she was determined to get her drivers license so she could get to the bingo's and casino. She did get them and on they went. She enjoyed friends, playing cards and socializing. She loved to curl, and travel with the girls. Reno and Mexico were their favorite spots. She offered unconditional support to her family and she was proud of all their accomplishments. Her home and heart were open to all friends and neighbours and she was loved for her generous spirit and warm hospitality. She taught her family the valves of hard work and commitment, honesty and loyalty. She believed strongly in the importance of family and helping others. She had a strong faith that gave her strength and comfort and was a regular parishioner at St. Mary's Parish every Sunday. In the last four years she continued to make her commitment to The Lord by attending church and Mass at St. Peter's Chapel in Melville in the wheel chair. Thanks to the kind people who would pick her up and wheel her there and back. Victoria, will be sadly missed and forever loved by her two daughters, Audrey (Gay) Patrick and Isabelle (Mark) Bigoraj: sons, Denis (Debbie), Francis (Sharon) daughter-in-law Maxine, Celine, and Pat.
