Obituary of Peter Spilchen

SPILCHEN - Peter Spilchen of Yorkton passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Kamsack Hospital following a time of failing health. He was 74 years of age. Peter Spilchen was born on August 18, 1938 in the Whitesand district of Saskatchewan; a son of Metro and Annie (nee Wasylowich) Spilchen. Peter was raised on the farm and attended the Byblow and Whitesand Schools. In 1950 the family moved to the Fone Hill district, where Peter attended the Fone Hill School. As a young man, Peter worked at the train station in Moose jaw before returning to Yorkton. He worked for a time at a plumbing company before beginning employment with Morris Rod-Weeder. On July 8, 1961 he was united in marriage to Olga Kowalyk at St. Mary's Church in Yorkton. Peter continued his work at Morris Industries until his retirement. Peter was an avid sportsman, and was very good at all sports. Bowling & slo-pitch were his favourites. He also enjoyed watching sports on TV, and in his younger years had coached youth sports. Peter will also be remembered as an excellent self taught musician, he learned to play many different instruments as a young man and he enjoyed entertaining family & friends with his musical talent. Predeceased by his beloved wife Olga on September 22, 2004; his parents, Metro & Annie; his daughter-in-law, Gail Bjorgan; his brothers-in-law, John Petrowsky, Carl Petrowsky and Walter Lezon. Peter is survived by his son Jeff (Jackie) of Ebenezer; one brother: Walter Spilchen of Jedburgh; seven sisters: Elizabeth Petrowsky, Katie Petrowsky, Doreen Lezon, & Evelyn (Allan) Tymko, all of Yorkton; Madeline (George) Sterner of Melfort; Agnes (Edward) Zwirsky of Jedburgh, and Pauline (Julian) Dennis of Yorkton; numerous nieces, nephews, and his many other relatives and friends. Prayer services were held on Wednesday evening, January 16, 2013 and the Requiem Divine Liturgy was held on Thursday morning, January 17, 2013, all from St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. Rev. Father Ray Lukie CSs.R. was the Celebrant.. Cantor Ed Pindus, assisted by members of the Parish Choir led in the singing of the responses. The crossbearer was Chad Dennis, the epistle-reader was Beverly Fookes. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Ed Zwirsky, Walter Spilchen, Jerome Petrowski, Darcy Tymko, Adam Dennis and Allan Zwirsky serving as the casketbearers.
