SENKOW - Mr. George Senkow beloved husband of Sophie Senkow of St. Paul Lutheran Home in Melville, formerly of the Springside district and Yorkton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the age of 98 years 9 months 20 days. George was born on March 16, 1914 to Wasyl and Dora (nee Shumay) in the Vasloutz district, south of Buchanan, SK. He was the 9th of 11 children, with George's passing all have now entered Eternal Rest. On August 3, 1941 George was united in marriage to Sophie Spezowka at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. They were blessed with three daughters, Rose-Marie, Iris and Diane. George and Sophie farmed north of Springside and also ran a Country Convenience Store with an Esso Gas bar. Trucking was part of George's career as well as driving a School Bus in the Canora School District for 13 years. George was on the church board as chairman for the Wasyliw Ukrainian Catholic Church, Buchanan district for 13 years. In 1975 George and Sophie sold the farm and moved to Yorkton. While in Yorkton George continued to drive the school bus for a few more years and also helped out with harvest for various farmers. Upon their official retirement George and Sophie enjoyed life by going out for coffee with friends. George also found great joy working in his garage and yard. George took ill in January 17, 2009 and was in the Yorkton Regional Health Centre until March 27, 2009 when he became a resident of St. Paul Lutheran Care Home in Melville. While in the Nursing Home, George appreciated the care he was given. He enjoyed his daily visits with his wife Sophie and always had a big smile on his face, when his family came to visit. His favourite saying was "SEE YOU WHEN YOU COME". He will be dearly and sadly missed by all who knew him. George was predeceased by his mother Dora on February 12, 1933 and father Wasyl December 20, 1956; by his five sisters, Maggie (Steve) Korlenchuk, Ann (John) Wasylowich, Kay (John) Hupka, Pauline Senkow and Nettie (John) Boychuk; and by five brothers, Metro (Mary), Peter (Mary), Mike, John and Fred and his son-in-law Lorne Spelay. George leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his long life, his wife Sophie of 71 years, his three daughters, Rose-Marie Massett of Yorkton, Iris Spelay of Kelowna, Diane (Ken) Sharp of Springside and their dog Doogie; his two grandsons, Gordon (Ellen) Spelay of Surrey, BC and Cameron (Cindy-Anne) Spelay of Midway, BC; sister-in-law Mary Senkow of Calgary, AB and two great granddaughters Sarah and Heather; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, January 11, 2013 from St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Fr. Peter Pidskalny, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. Responses were sung by Ed Pindus and parish choir members. Debbie Hull served as the crossbearer. Interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Chris Senkow, Cliff Senkow, Murray Spezowka, Raymond Spezowka, Terry Hull and Levi Hull serving as the casketbearers. A reception followed at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cultural Centre with Gordon Spelay giving words of Remembrance and appreciation on behalf of the family. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com . Memorial donations in memory of George may be made to St. Mary's Church Building Fund or to the Recreation Department at St. Paul Lutheran Home as gifts of remembrance. Arrangements were entrusted to Bailey's Funeral Home.
