A memorial folder from the funeral service may be printed under the "Memories" tab, then choose "Memorial Program". HOOD - Mrs. Alice Hood, beloved wife of the late Mike Hood of Yorkton. Alice completed her earthly life peacefully, with her daughter and a dear friend at her side, on the morning of January 1, 2013, at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. Alice was born on January 18, 1933, in West Bend, SK to Peter and Margaret (nee Federko) Karapita. Alice grew up on the family farm near West Bend where she developed a hard work ethic at an early age. One of Alice's favorite memories as a young teenager was looking after her family while her mother was hospitalized. Alice's responsibilities involved babysitting infant siblings, catching and cleaning poultry before it could be prepared, and then cooking three large meals a day for her family and for the men who worked on the field. Alice married Mike Hood on July 13, 1952, at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ituna. They spent the first twelve years of their married life in West Bend where they raised two daughters and operated a general store and Shell bulk gas dealership. When closure of the West Bend school appeared imminent, Alice and Mike sold their business and moved to Yorkton in 1964. In 1965 they became partners with Frank Kozan and opened Kozan-Hood Hardware at 17 Betts Avenue. Alice and Mike later purchased the business and operated Hood Hardware Ltd. Alice enjoyed serving customers, attending trade shows and conventions in Winnipeg, and meeting with salesmen who visited the store. After retirement in 1985, Alice enjoyed pursuing numerous hobbies and interests. She was an excellent cook, seamstress, gardener and crafter. Alice had the ability to recreate tasty restaurant meals without using a recipe. She sewed clothes for her young daughters without using a pattern. She saw the beauty in small things such as beautiful calendar pictures. Alice and Mike enjoyed spending long summer days in their yard and garden. They enjoyed fishing, being Saskatchewan Roughrider football season ticket holders, and having backyard barbeques. Alice was always thinking of others. She would take hot dogs and ice cream cones to her senior neighbours because she wanted them to enjoy barbecue food, too. Alice and Mike enjoyed traveling to various winter destinations. Language barriers were never a problem for Alice as she had the ability to find ways to communicate and make friends with those who didn't speak English. Alice was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League for many years. She enjoyed volunteering for Meals on Wheels, Christmas gift wrapping at the mall and working at St. Mary's Cultural Centre where her favourite volunteer position was working with the Table Setting group. It was here that Alice developed friendships with many special people. Alice was a natural beauty whose classy appearance and down-to-earth style easily turned heads. Her gentle, caring and giving nature was unlike any other. She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother and friend who lived and believed in the joy of work and the universal values of kindness, honesty and respect for others. Alice was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Mike, and daughter, Sharon. She is survived by her daughter, Dianne of Winnipeg; her brothers Walter Karapita of Foam Lake, Edwin Karapita (Joan) of West Bend and Gerald Karapita of Barriere, BC; sister Adele Pearson of Regina, and stepsisters Hazel Majcher and Elizabeth Hopko of Regina; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends. Prayer Services were held on Sunday evening, January 6, 2013 from St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Ray Lukie, C.Ss.R. officiating.
