Obituary of Jean Sakundiak

SAKUNDIAK - Jean Rose Sakundiak was born on December 2, 1917 on the family farm in the Buchanan district of Saskatchewan to Mary (nee Lanski) and Frank Slugocki. She attended Monastyr School and Dobrowody Church. She learned to play the organ and accordion. On July 25, 1939 she married Frank Soloski, and were blessed with two sons and four daughters. In later years she worked at the University of Alberta Hospital and at the Regency Hotel in Edmonton, and the Town & Country Hotel in Calgary. In 1977 she worked at the Holiday Inn and at the Flare & Flagan Restaurant in Yorkton. Jean travelled to the Philippine Islands, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Mexico and to various places in the United States and Canada. Jean maintained her independence until the very end by living in her own home. Jean also liked to play cards and liked to visit and have visitors come over. She always attended the pilgrimage to the Rama Grotto. She passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012 at the age of 95 years. Predeceased by her first husband Frank Soloski in 1973; her second husband Peter Sakundiak in 1993; a daughter, Evelyn Musarichan in 1991; by brothers Walter, Joe, Julius, Bernard, Albert, Ben and Edwin; and by sisters Ruzalia Szydlowski and Helen Slugocki (Sr. Jerome). She leaves to cherish her memory her two sons: Adolph (Janet) Soloski of Langenburg; Lawrence (Rose) Soloski of Saskatoon; three daughters, Elizabeth (Bill) Shumay of Yorkton; Marlene (Herman) Franzman of Leduc, AB; and Teresa (Ben) Uhryn of Rhein ; eleven grandchildren & eleven great grandchildren. Also a brother Eddie (Rose) Slogotski of Yorkton; and a sister, Elizabeth Clampitt of Lethbridge; numerous nieces, nephews, and her many other relatives and friends. The prayer vigil service was held on Friday evening, January 4th 2013 from St. Gerard's Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton, led by Father Frances Hengen. The Lector was Leonard Slugotski, words of remembrance were given by son Adolph. The hymns were 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing', Psalm 27, and 'Immaculate Mary'. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday , January 5th from St. Gerard's Church with father Frances as celebrant. Altarservers were Andrew Bazin & Jacob Baker. The Lectors were Leona Stewart & Randy Shumay, the Gift-bearers were Kristine Dahl & Kyle Stewart. David King was the crossbearer. Organist, Katherine Flaman led members of the parish choir and the congregation in the singing of the hymns 'Amazing Grace', Psalm 23, 'Hail Mary, Gentle Woman', 'On Eagles Wings', 'Song of the Angels', and 'Holy God We Praise Thy Name'. Special music was the polish hymn 'Serdecz Matka'. The interment took place in the Canora Town Cemetery with Brennan Uhyn, Kevin Soloski, Ken Shumay, Alvin Soloski, Tanya Franzman and Candace Franzman-King serving as the casketbearers.
