Obituary of Mary Spelay

SPELAY - Mary (Maria) Spelay nee (Fedun) was born June 25, 1922 on Keymo's farm in the Whitesand district of Saskatchewan to Nellie and Harry Fedun. Mary attended the Black Poplar School that was 3 miles from their home at Horseshoe Lake. She only went a few short years as she had to help at home with the younger siblings, gardening and the farm. At 17, Mary started making fancy cakes, especially wedding cakes. Making 6 - 8 per year until she was 70. She had to come out of retirement for granddaughter Lynn's cake (1995) and again for granddaughter Laurie's wedding (2000). Mary also did a lot of fancy sewing. Including her own wedding dress and both wedding dresses for daughter Lorraine's weddings and bridal parties. Mary married Nick Pawliw on July 30, 1939 at St. Mary's Church, Whitesand. A daughter Violet was born in 1940 but passed away at 3 months. They then sold all their belongings and moved to Welland, Ontario, where Mary worked at a cotton mill then the canning factory. Daughter Rosemarie was born Feb. 17, 1942. The family then moved back to the Whitesand district. On July 28, 1958 daughter Lorraine was born. In 1962 Mary's husband Nick passed away and thereafter Mary and Lorraine moved into Springside. Mary met John G. Spelay and the couple were wed on November 21, 1965. Mary made the best perogies, paskas and mile high lemon pies. She also made flower bouquets and boutonnieres for weddings, even for the children and grandchildren's weddings. In 1995 Mary and John moved to Lloydminster. John passed away on January 28th, 2001. Mary lived at Fellowship Village, then at the Pioneer Lodge until May of 2012, when she became a resident of the Dr. Cooke Extended Care Centre. She passed away peacefully on Sunday Dec. 2, 2012 at the age of 90 years, 5 months & 7 days. Predeceased by her parents, Harry and Nellie Fedun; 1st husband, Nick Pawliw, 2nd husband, John G. Spelay; infant daughter, Violet; daughter, Rosemarie Diakow; son-in-law, Bill Diakow; grandson Triton Diakow; sisters: Katie (Joe) Tirone & Dolly (Harry) McKenzie; brothers: Michael Fedun in infancy, Henry Fedun, Otto (Joy) Fedun, Fred (Margaret) Fedun, Tony Fedun, & Steve (Margaret) Fedun; as well as other brothers and sisters-in-law. Leaving to mourn her passing, daughter Lorraine (Ed) Torgerson of Lloydminster, granddaughter Lynn (Dave) Kielniak, granddaughter Laurie (Doug) Jordan, great granddaughter Kori Jordan; grandson Anthony Triton (Trish) Diakow, great grandson TJ Diakow; ganddaughter Treva Diakow, and great gandson Talon Diakow - Dee. Also sisters: Ann (Bill) Derow, Martha (Greg) Currie, & Rose (Nestor) Yurkiw; as well as numerous other relatives & friends. Prayer services were held on Wednesday evening, December 5th, 2012 from the chapel of Bailey's Funeral Home, Yorkton. The Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Thursday, December 6th from St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Ray Lukie C.Ss.R. as Celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita and parish choir members. The crossbearers were Kori Jordan, TJ Diakow & Talon Diakow-Dee. The honorary bearers were Ed Torgerson, Trish Diakow, Brian Hoveland & everyone present . The interment took place at St. Mary's Parish Cemetery, Whitesand with Laurie & Doug Jordan, Lynn and Dave Kielniak, Treva Diakow & Anthony Triton Diakow serving as the casketbearers.
