Obituary of John Wasylowich

WASYLOWICH - John Wasylowich was born on January 7, 1918 in the Buchanan district of Saskatchewan; a son of Tom & Mary (nee Ozinary) Wasylowich. John was raised on the family farm and attended school at North Lake. As a young man, John worked at various jobs, helping farmers at an early age , to later years when he was employed by Good Spirit Provincial Park in their maintenance department. He retired in 1982. On July 25, 1946 he was united in marriage to Martha Shumay at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Whitesand. They were blessed with a daughter Ann. In 1983 John and Martha retired from farming and moved to Yorkton. After Martha passed away in 2003, John moved to the Springside Heritage Place to be closer to family. John enjoyed good health until April 15, 2012, when a fall caused a broken hip. Since June 7th of this year, John had been a resident of the Theodore Health Care Centre. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 4, 2012. He was 94 years of age. Besides his wife Martha, John was predeceased by a brother Steve Wasylowich, and by a sister Annie Yanish. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Ann and her husband Trevor Shindle of Springside and their children: Rachal (Rick) Chartier of Springside; Nathaniel (Chantell) Shindle of Springside; and Matthew (Candice) Shindle of Springside; two special great grandchildren (Gido's troublemakers) Marissa & Makayla Chartier. Also brothers Bill of Edmonton and George of Canora; and sisters Lena Werner of Yorkton & Olga (Bill) Yagelniski of Hyas, and their families. Prayer services were held on Wednesday evening, November 7th and the funeral service was held on Thursday morning, November 8th, 2012, all from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre. Very Rev. Father Peter Pidskalny of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church officiated. The responses were sung by Ed Pindus and Parish Choir members. The interment took place in the Springside Cemetery with Trevor, Nathaniel, and Matthew Shindle, Rick Chartier, Don Werner and Don Spilchen serving as the casketbearers.
