Obituary of Helen Novak

On September 23, 2012 Helen passed away with her daughters at her side after a hard fought battle with cancer. She was born November 30, 1932 to Albert and Rose (Werbicki) Novakowski in Melville, SK. After graduating from high school she entered nursing and graduated from the Moose Jaw Providence Hospital as a Registered Nurse. Helen met her husband to be Andy when she was in her teens. Andy tagged along one day with his two older brothers Bill and Gerry when they went courting Helen's older sisters Josie and Emily. Andy would tell the story how there hiding behind the wood stove was a shy young Helen. Needless to say Andy continued to tag along. Eventually three brothers married three sisters. Andy and Helen were married November 20, 1954. This union was blessed with two daughters, Catherine and Caron (Dave) and four grandchildren Tallia, Lindee, Marcus and Nathan. Helen was employed at the Yorkton Union Hospital for 35 years, first in pediatrics and completing her nursing career in geriatrics. Helen was a member of St. Gerard's Parish and a true believer in the power of prayer always mindful of the needs of others. Her interests over the years included needle point, petit point, knitting and crocheting, gardening, baking, Blue Jays baseball, puzzles, current events and yes she was known to test her luck at the casino! Together with her daughters and grandchildren Helen leaves to mourn her passing and celebrate her life her sisters; Eileen (Dave) Dempsey, Theresa Yastrub; brother Henry; brothers-in-law Gerry Novak, Dennis (Irene) Novak, sisters-in-law Olga Popik, Stella Kwaznitza, Judy Novakowski, Pauline Novakowski; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends Clara, Greg, Ross, Dagmar, Thavisha & Johannes. She is predeceased by her parents, brothers Bill, Frank and Ed, sisters Josie and Emily. Helen lost her best friend and husband Andy in 2009. The Funeral Service was held on Friday, September 28, 2012 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre, Yorkton, Saskatchewan with Reverend Fr. Francis Hengen presiding. The organist Judy Berg led members of St. Gerard's choir in the singing of the hymns, Prayer of St. Francis, Song of the Angels, Holy God We Praise Thy Name. The readings were given by grandson, Marcus. The interment took place in the Garden of Memories at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with daughters, Catherine and Caron serving as the urn bearers. In Helen's memory, donations can be made to The Health Foundation (Palliative Care Services).
