Obituary of Evelyn MacPhail
MacPhail - Evelyn MacPhail was born on April 11, 1916 at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; a daughter of Sophia (nee MacLean) and Colin "Dan" MacPhail. She resided in Moose Jaw until about nine years of age, when the family moved to Melville. Evelyn briefly lived in Winnipeg with her sister Helene and then returned to Melville to open a store "Evelyn's" selling children's clothes and toys on Main Street near her father's barber shop. Evelyn was a prolific seamstress and knitter however was mostly known for her Cowichan sweaters and hand-made dolls based upon nursery rhymes. She had an extensive doll collection that she donated to a local museum. Evelyn always loved to spend time with and entertaining children whether it be picking wild flowers or telling stories. She was also a keen hockey fan and booster of the Melville Millionaires. She came to know many NHL stars who made their way through Melville. John Ferguson of the Montreal Canadians was a personal friend. Another favourite pastime was photography - flash bulbs were always popping. Evelyn continued to live in the family home on 10th avenue until September 2000 when she moved into St. Paul's Lutheran Home where she received excellent care until her passing on September 16, 2012. She was 96 years old. Evelyn is predeceased by her parents, brother Archie, and by sisters June and Helene. Friends are invited to Evelyn's memorial service that will be held on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 11:30am at the gravesite in the Melville Municipal Cemetery.
