Obituary of Mary Makowetski

MAKOWETSKI - Mrs. Mary Makowetski of Yorkton entered eternal rest on September 3, 2012 at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. She was 2 months short of celebrating her 100th year. Mary was born on October 28, 1912 in Ukraine, a daughter of Dmytro and Mary Washik. On October 18, 1932 Mary was united in marriage to Peter Makowetski at Sacred Heart Church in Ituna. Following their marriage they resided on the Washik farm near Goodeve and later the Makowetski farm at Beaverdale. In 1936 they moved to the Jedburgh district where they farmed and raised their family. Mary did everything on the farm from breaking the land to stooking at harvest time. She also milked cows and raised chickens. She would pick wild strawberries and raspberries and can them for winter. In 1975 they retired from farming but continued to reside on the farm until 1977 when they moved to Yorkton. Mary enjoyed curling and was a member of the Good Deed Club in Jedburgh, as well a member of St. Olga's Women's Association. Her children and grandchildren will always remember her delicious homemade bread and perogies. Predeceased by her parents, husband Peter; brother John; step sisters Sophie Bohach and Eva Makowetski; a great grandchild Jason and a son - in - law Stan Kowalyshyn; Mary leaves to cherish her memory a son Al (Joyce) Makowetski of Edmonton; three daughters Iris (Jack) Hawka of Yorkton, Frances (Mel) Rasmussen of Ituna and Jean Kowalyshyn of Regina; 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 27 great great grandchildren. Requiem Divine Liturgy was held on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Methodius Kushko, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Ed Pindus, Colette Karapita & parish choir members. The cross bearer was Cameron Barton and the epistle reader was Jacquie Barton. The interment took place in the Garden of Crucifixion at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Sheldon Hawka, Wayne Kowalyshyn, Ken Kowalyshyn, Kelly Bulych, Casey Chartrand and Wade Barton serving as the casket bearers.
