Obituary of George Kish

KISH - Mr. George Kish of Kelliher, formerly of Leross, beloved husband of Sophie Kish passed away on August 13th, 2012. He was born on September 17th, 1922, the third son of Louis and Rose (Lukacs) Kish. His early childhood and adult years were spent on the farm and attending school in Leross. After completing grade eight, he left school to help farm. In 1939, he began taking an electronics course by correspondence. In 1943, he was called into the army and served three years in the Royal Canadian Signal Corps in Canada and Newfoundland. Discharged in 1946, he returned to Leross and continued with electronics. On January 13th, 1947, George married Sophie Chlan of Goodeve, Saskatchewan. They lived in Leross for sixty- three years and later moved to the Paradise Lodge in Kelliher in 2010. They were blessed with three daughters, Linda, Jeanette, and Marie. He owned and operated the brick hall in Leross. For a short time he managed the Leross Co-op bulk services and did general trucking. From 1950 to 1956, he owned two caterpillars for bush clearing and land breaking. During that time he also bought a half section of land north of Leross becoming a part time farmer. After selling the caterpillars and land, he spent more time on the radio and T.V. business. Expansion was necessary, so the site of the old Co-op store was bought and Leross Radio & T.V. was established. Upon retiring in 1974, George's nephew Ralph Kish bought and continued the business leaving George and Sophie time for travel and community work. Over the years George served on the Credit Union Board in Lestock and as Vice Chairman of the board for the first Homecare District in Saskatchewan. In Leross, he served as a councillor, and for many years, as Mayor. He helped develop the Leross Museum, the Heritage Park, the senior's centre, the swimming pool, and also cleared and dug the basement for St. Jude's Roman Catholic Church in Leross. George was predeceased by his parents, Rose (Lukacs) and Louis Kish, his brothers Louis, Steve, John, and sisters, Sister Columba, Rose Bulka, and Margaret Young. George is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Sophie Kish, his daughters Linda (Ken) Granatier, Jeanette Vass, and Marie (Gordon) Horvath, his five grandchildren, Daphne (Granatier) Fiorante, Wendy (Granatier) Waller, Christy Yasinowski, Stacey Yasinowski, and Jordan Horvath, his six great grandchildren, Tyler, Brady, and Jenna Fiorante, and Morgan, Sidney, and Kaleb Waller, as well as, his brother Joe Kish of Emerald Park, and sister Elizabeth Kish of Kelowna BC. George is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. The Prayer Service was held on Sunday, August 19, 2012 and the Funeral Mass on Monday, August 20th at Mary, Queen of Hearts Roman Catholic Church in Lestock with Rev. Father Wojciech Wojtkowiak, OMI as the Celebrant. The music ministry was supplied by Sister Bernadette Feist, OSU. The cross bearer was Morgan Waller and the readers were Daphne Fiorante and Stacey Yasinowski. The Gift Bearers were Linda and Ken Granatier. Wendy Waller led the intentions. Dorothy Sentes and Father W. Wojtkowiak administered the communion. The eulogy was presented by Jordan Horvath and Tyler Fiorante paid tribute in song, Amazing Grace. All those whose life was touched by George were considered honorary bearers. Jeanette Vass served as the urn bearer. A private interment will take place at a later date. Memorials in memory of George may be made to a charity of choice as a gift of remembrance.
