Obituary of Pauline Spelay

SPELAY Mrs. Pauline Spelay, formerly of Yorkton and the Whitesand district passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the St. Paul Lutheran Care Home in Melville on July 23, 2012 at the age of 94 years and 9 months. Pauline was born on October 14, 1917 in the Whitesand District to Nick and Mary (Senkiw) Lackmanec. As a young girl she attended Beblo School and after completing her education she left home to work. On October, 25, 1936 she was united in marriage to Nick Spelay at the St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. They made their home on a farm south of Good Spirit Acres and together they were blessed with five children. As a couple they ran a mixed farming operation. In 1984 they retired to Yorkton and made their new home in Queen Elizabeth Court. Pauline was a faithful parishioner of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church. Pauline was a great mom, baba, great baba and a wonderful cook. Pauline possessed many self-taught talents such as knitting, crocheting, sewing, canning and baking. She also enjoyed gardening and flowers. In her retirement at Queen Elizabeth Court she was very involved in the Senior Centre and enjoyed participating in the activities. She continued to enjoy all the activities at the St. Paul Lutheran Care Home in Melville. She will be dearly and sadly missed by all who knew her. Pauline was predeceased by her parents; Nick and Mary; her husband Nick; her son Johnny; one brother John; three sisters Ann, Kay and Olga; She is lovingly remembered by her three sons; Dennis and Rozella of Yorkton; Michael and Joyce of Canora; Dave and Faye of Yorkton; one daughter Trudy of Saskatoon; ten grandchildren, Murray (Cynthia); Deb (Mike); Michele (Mark); Tracy (Greg); Kevin (Deb); Darren (Michelle); Denall (Doug); Ryan (Tanya); Janna (Chris); Curtis (Amanda); twelve great-grandchildren, Brett, Jillana, Kasia, Tiana, Dylan, Logan, Leah, Kale, Nicholas, Thomas, Riel and Evangeline; her brothers Mike of Yorkton and Joe of Springside; Daniel (Vicki) of Calgary; her sisters Donna of Pickering, ON, Margaret, Lillian, Cecile and Elizabeth of Saskatoon; Irene (Peter) of Yorkton and Adel (Paul) of Los Angeles as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. The Prayer Service was held on Thursday, July 26, 2012, preceded by the Holy Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus, Father Delaere Council. Officiating the prayers were Very Rev. Peter Pidskalny, C.Ss.R., Rev. Father Ray Lukie, C.Ss.R. and Rev. Father Joakim Rac. The eulogy was given by Michele Belanger. Requiem Divine Liturgy was held on Friday, July 27, 2012 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Ray Lukie, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led Laurie Kais, Ron Wizniak and St. Mary's English choir members. The cross bearer was Janna Ogloff and the epistle reader was Denall Evans. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Murray Spelay, Kevin Spelay, Darren Spelay, Ryan Spelay, Curtis Spelay and Brett Woloschuk serving as the casket bearers. Following the reception Dr. Ryan Spelay shared reflections of his Baba's life. Memorials in Pauline's name can be made to a Charity of Choice.
